Ames Hendrickson Obituary

Hendrickson, Ames Birrell April 26, 1923 - June 9, 2011 Ames was born in Portland, Oregon to Winifred (Birrell) Hendrickson and Judge J. Hunt Hendrickson. Ames attended Ainsworth Grammar School, Lincoln High School, and Reed College. He was a long-time member of the Multnomah Athletic Club. Ames enlisted in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Prog. in '42 and served as a Naval Lt. in command of an LST (landing ship tank) during WWII in the So. Pacific. He finished his B.A. at Univ. of Oregon in '48, also excelling in tennis, golf, & swimming. From '48 -'65, Ames held numerous positions with Meier & Frank Co. in Portland until sold, then worked for Broadway-Hale dep't. stores in LA, serving with distinction as Store Manager for Del Amo, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach stores. Retiring in '81, he devoted himself to charity and faith-based community work, which brought him much joy. Well-known for his generosity and many kindnesses, but much to his chagrin, Ames was referred to as a saint among his wide circle of friends. His only sibling and brother, Jack, passed away in 1981. He is survived by his namesake nephew, Ames D. Hendrickson, and wife Patty, of Bend, OR, who were at his bedside along with loving neighbors and caretakers, Steve and Debbie Haag, and Laura Gaughan, as well as close friends Don & Helen Cline, and Jim Burgeson. He also has numerous relatives in Frederick, MD, including cousin, Carroll Hendrickson, Jr. A memorial service & reception is being held Sat., June 18, 2011 at his home at 11:00 a.m. A service in Portland, OR is also set for Tues., June 21, 2011 at the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 3:00 pm. Email [email protected] for more info. Remembrances to: St. Vincent Med. Foundation, c/o Carolyn Winter, Chief Development Executive at 9205 SW Barnes Road, Portland, OR 97225 or directly through www.providencefoundations.org.

You will be sorely missed, dear friend. You gave of yourself to so many. A kinder, more thoughtful, and generous man never lived. May you rest in peace, Ames, in the arms of your savior.

My earliest employment was at Meier & Frank (1958-1963)at both the Downtown & Lloyd Center stores. I have many warm memories of Ames and "AMF" during this tenure and was selected as a Retail Mgmnt trainee at M&F which became the cornerstone of my successful career in both retailing and the Federal govt. I owe much to Ames and wish him Godspeed. What a totally grand guy...Good as any and way better than most.
