Dennis Flanagan was my favorite Spanish Teacher @ Rancho Alamitos H.S. he was funny, entertaining and encouraging. He had a huge impact on my career as I enrolled in Spanish 1-4 As a Teacher he demanded excellence, he demanded discipline and we were all the better for it. One day he threw a guy out of his class because he didn't do the homework. I wish I still had the opportunity to tell Mr. Flanagan how grateful I was for the strong foundation he built in us. Because of his belief in my abilities I later enrolled in a Court Interpreting School to become a professional Spanish Interpreter. I will never forget those high school years!(1978) they left an indelible mark on my life. I send my condolences to his family and prayers of peace. Thank you

Dennis another year, i meant to do this on the 26th, the third anniversary of your trip to heaven. Although i didn't get it done i still had you on my mind and ln my heart, as I went to church (St. Polycarp) that Tuesday morning, remembering how you would meet me there on Tuesday morning's and we would walk and talk after Mass.
I miss you a lot and thank you for being there for me while dealing with your own health issues.
I pray your at peace with our Lord along with Mom, Dad and Jack.

As a famous person once said "thanks for the memories". Dennis, there are not many days that I don't think about the good friends that came from the RAHS experience and you certainly are at the top to the list. I know someday we will meet again for one more toast to the Green & Gold.

It is hard to believe it's been two years since Dennis left us. After reading the messages already left, I do not believe I can be as eloquent as those I follow. It has been well established that Dennis was loved by everyone that knew him.
I lost my youngest son last year so I know the deep feeling of the loss of a loved one that left us way to early in life.
Rest in peace Dennis and may the Lord keep you in his arms.

Don't think of him as gone away,
his journey's just begun.
This life holds many facets,
this Earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the fears,
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years...
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today -
how nothing but our sadness,
can really pass away.
And think of him as living -
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost -
and he was loved so much.
Two years, but I miss you like it was yesterday Uncle Den. Always in our hearts - we love you.

Uncle Denny,
I'm almost afraid to do this because I think I'll mess it up. But, I have to honor my Uncle. Our family is very close. When we needed help, everyone lent a hand. But you went the extra mile. Some things I'll never forget are our trips to Showbiz Pizza Place, which kept my mind off of things at home. And once, when money was tight, you helped by providing a huge tub of peanut butter. You were always a great role model for me and all my cousins, and, as has been pointed out, your smile was infectious! More important, you were a great father, as is evidenced by your sons. I love and miss you dearly.

Emotion rises up again as I read these thoughts and loving comments about a man that I called my best friend. When a good friend is gone there is an emptiness that is hard to replace. Dennis was a great athlete and I got to enjoy that through his sons Todd, Denny and Jimmy. He was a great communicator and I got to enjoy that through the many trips that we took and the conversations he got me involved in even if I couldn't speak Spanish. Lois remains a sweet, dear friend that misses her man as we all do. We all miss him, more than we all maybe thought we would.
I think of him often; from the little idiosyncrocies to the enjoyment of a good moment. I remember the last time we saw each other, he was sleeping, resting maybe with his eyes closed and I took his hand to let him know I was there. After a time he opened them and smiled as if to say, "It's ok my friend, he's with me and I with him".
My time is not finished yet but when it is you can bet there will be joy in my heart being with Dennis again. Thanks for your friendship. We pray for his family knowing that they are loved and taken care of.

I am at a loss for words hearing of Dennis passing. I knew him well back at Rancho Alamitos High School along with brother Danny. Their wasn't one person who didn't know of the running prowless of Dennis on the football field. One of the best open field runners in the conference.
I haven't seen Dennis since high school but he is a person one cannot forget. I cannot ever remember him without a smile on his face.
My heart felt prayers go out to Danny and all of the family of Dennis. I am sure he will be great missed. May God be with you buddy.

Our Hearts and prayers go out to all our dear Flanagan family members! May you find joy in the Blessing of having such a great human being as your brother, uncle, husband and father! He was an exceptional athlete. He was a devoted football & track coach, a devoted brother, husband and father. He was a devoted Teacher fo over 35 years. He was a devoted servant of God. He had a great sense of humor, of giving, of love of his family, of being a mentor to others who were privilaged to have been blessed to know him! Our Dear Dennis and Louis raised 3 beautiful sons in which they are so so proud of! God Blesses Each and Everyone of You Each and Every Day! Rest in Peace our Dear Friend Dennis! You are truly missed by so so many! We love you and God loves you! Keep smiling!

Dennis and I met as Sophomores in High School. Rancho was a new High School with lots of opportunities and tremendous school spirit. Dennis was our football hero and diligent Spanish student. What a wonderful time we all had.
In later years I was privileged to meet Lois and their outstanding sons. What a tribute they are to Dennis as husband and father!
I join Danny, the entire Flanagan clan, friends from High School and beyond in saying Rest in Peace dear Dennis. We are blessed to have known you.

I agree with my mom, that it seems challenging to have such a little box to use to share a memory of such an incredible man.
One thing I have to squeeze in is the story I told everyone about my Uncle Denny. I was always completely fascinated by that "bee-bee" that was lodged in his cheek! I would ask him to show my friends and me and he would stick out his tongue inside his mouth to tighten the skin, and there it was... a round little ball hiding underneath the skin of Uncle Den's cheek. Then he would explain to us that it had sunken over time from a spot more close to his ear. Man, that always impressed me. I think this story shows the combination of strength and silliness Uncle Denny just oozed of. He was so fun to talk to, and I always knew he genuinely cared about how things were going in my life. What a cool guy. =) Funny enough (with the bee bee story in mind), Uncle Denny always called me Molly-Bee, and now I can use that nickname in his memory.. as a little reminder of the man that my mama always used as an example or role model for Mick, Mags and me. And every time I say HUNNY or use my Spanish I hope he'll be proud!
I'm proud that you were my family, Uncle Den, and I love you and miss you...
Love, your MollyBee

I think of Denny often since he passed. It seems so hard to believe that he's gone. I'm happy for him that he's with the Lord, but sad for us. We'll miss his smiling face, his leading us in Christmas Carols at Ginny's house, his presence (so important) and speeches (long) at the family functions, his honest generosity and caring for all of us that knew him, his love of Jesus Christ...... so many other things.
I think of him often...
He will be greatly missed.

To the Flanagan family,
I, Peggy's long-time friend, want to convey my thoughts to you. The loss of Dennis must be so hard to bear, and I am praying that God will comfort each one of you during this time. The last time I saw Dennis was at David Hale's house for a pool party. If anyone has the look of an Irishman, Dennis certainly did! I perceived him to be a man who loved his family very much; it was so evident. Take care & may the Lord bless you.

The fall of 1957 was the first time I saw Dennis. It was at the Garden Grove H.S. football field night game-----the Rancho Vaqueros looked magnificant dressed in their GREEN & GOLD uniforms Dennis always ran, what appeared effortlessly, like a gazelle----long, loping strides for big gainers. He was just as gifted in his track events. Over the years, I spent many wonderful days with Dennis at the lively South Bay Club Apts. at West Texas State University in Canyon,Texas, at Tulia, Texas where Dennis taught high school while he worked on his Masters. Dennis became a well known running back as a West Texas State University Buffalo nicked named "FLASH Flanagan". I was " adopted" by all those gracious, kind, loving, considerate Flanagan Clan. I spent many, many X-mas eves, sibling birthdays, weddings, funerals, beach gatherings, and parties/bar-b-ques at the Casa with lovely Lois & family. My brother Bill, and Dennis spent lots of time together over the many years having fun, laughs, consoling and encouraging one another. He was a quiet, strong willed gentleman------he was and still is my friend forever. He never had a harsh word for anyone, except perhaps a football player or two. He was God loving, kind, considerate and always willing to teach and help others. He and Lois raised three beautiful, polite, considerate and respectful young men----May the Lord look after and bless all of them, especially in this time of loss. I will miss my friend dearly forever.

Danny, again, my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Reading everyone’s comments enlightened me as to what a remarkable man Dennis grew up to be. I only knew you and Dennis during my high school days at RAHS; but back then I realized what a strong clan the Flanagan’s were! Because I hadn’t seen Dennis since 1960, he will forever in my mind remain young! (I’ve sent you a picture of him and fellow football players scanned from my 1958 yearbook. I’m sure you’ve seen it, but maybe someone else might get a kick out of it.) What wonderful memories that team left us all. God bless Dennis and peace to your family.

Thank you for being such a wonderful big brother. You always made me feel safe and special. You took an interest in everything going on in my life. You gave me tons of fun when I was a kid not to mention buying me a 1967 Ford Mustang when I was 17, very cool! Besides all of these wonderful times and your generosity you gave me a wonderful sister-in-law and 3 truly special nephews. I feel so blessed to be your little sister. I promise to uphold the tradition and sing the carols extra loud at the Flanagan Family Christmas party. I'll miss you until we are together again. I bet Mom is "ge geeing" your back right now! I first met Dennis in the 6th grade when he and Dan came to school at Marie L. Hare, and have counted them as good friends ever since. The memories of our years together are to numerious to mention, but will never be forgotten. Even though I have not lived in California for approximately 30 years and never visited with Dennis or talked to him since I left, he was never forgotten and was always considered one fo my best friends. I will miss not seeing him at our 50 year HS reunion, and I'm sure everyone who attends will feel the same. Would have loved to have talked over the old times with him. My condolences to the entire Flanagan family.

I have known Dennis for over 50 years. We played football together, with brother Dan for four years. He was an inspiration to all, even then. We were raised in the best of times and had fun going to dances, parties, and especially playing football. As I said at the memorial, he was leader of the pack. A wonderful friend, and his Mom, Dad and brothers and sisters were a tight family. I will forever rember Dennis and will miss him beyond belief. His belief in God was his storngest point. He raised a beautiful famlie with his lovely wife Lois. Thanks you Dennis for sharing your time and pieces of your life with me. I love you amigo.

I will miss you Dennis so much! I will remember forever the advise you gave me when we last talked. Sweet Brother, I chose to meet some of the people that have been involved in your life. I met young Preston who spoke so respectfully and lovingly of you. I had a lump in my throat. You played a big part in so many people lives. I'll never forget the times we had as kids they were the best! You were my team member against the "plain faces" and you were always making us laugh. Whenever you had to babysit; I chuckle when I remember if there was a strange noise in the house, You would always hand me a bat and walk behind me, we would tiptoe all around the house looking for the "bogie man". This is just a very small part of why you were so funny! I love you "Denny"!! I know you are in God's loving care because of the love you had for Him and you never failed to speak about God or share this love. You inspired me to learn much more about the Lord. You were always open to my point of view and that was very special to me. Thanks for all the great football memories, you were spectacular!!!

Dear Dan and Flanagan Family...
It is an ultimate sadness when we lose a loved one. And even though it forms a hole in our hearts and our lives, it is so much smaller that the wholeness they gave us by being in our lives. Dennis and all of you in his family were so blessed to have experienced so much love and that will always be with you. I feel like saying that you are so lucky but luck had nothing to do with it. It is obvious that you are all extraordinary people who value and treasure each other. Let that sustain you and remember that tears are God's healing elixir and even though nothing can completely take away the pain of loss, time will soften it and allow you to visit fond memories with an easier smile.
I never had the honor of meeting Dennis but I am a friend of his brother, Dan. I am so grateful that you were willing to share your special moments of a loving farewell. It has touched me more deeply than you will ever know and you continue to be in my prayers.
My uncle has a unique perspective on death. Well, actually not death because Jesus brought the message of life everlasting. For the one who has left us, it is like putting on new cloths...and beginning a new, better chapter in their lives. I think Jesus would agree. I find great comfort in that.
With loving thoughts for your whole family,
Donna,

Uncle Denny,
You are one of the uncles that make me proud to let people know I'm related to the Flanagan clan. You were a great listener; it was a pleasure talking to you because you always seemed eager to hear even the more boring aspects of my life. When you spoke, you did so with intelligence and certainty, and your stories were the kind that weren't meant to be in books for then lesser storytellers could rob them of their vitality and wonderfully spun articulation.
You have left behind about the best legacy a man could hope for. Besides a standing school record and many classrooms full of students, you left 3 amazing boys behind for us to enjoy.
Uncle Denny, you were a warrior, a scholar, and you loved your family. You were a great man.
Thanks.

This is hard for me. There are so many things to say about my brother, Denny, that I don't know where to begin. He was everything you want a big brother to be... smart, strong, funny, generous and full of love. He was also full of God's grace. The strength that he showed in the last years of his life is truly inspirational to me and I will never forget how he faced the adversity of illness with such grace and love. I will also never forget all the fun he brought to our family gatherings or the twinkle in his eye when he was up to something. He was the one we looked to, to dance at the weddings, to make a special toast, to give the perfect eulogy, and of course, to lead the Christmas Carols. We will think of him always during those times in the future, and we will carry on, keeping his memory alive and telling wonderful, funny stories about Denny; reliving how much love and joy he brought to us.
I know Heaven is richer with Denny's presence, but we here are truly poorer.
I love you, Den and I miss you.

Mr. Flanagan was one of my favorite teachers at Rancho Alamitos High. I don't know how I would have survived Spanish if not for his wit and humor and his constant exhortations to participate in class and at least try to speak the language. He was also a fine coach who cared about his students/athletes as people. He could be tough and demanding, but I never once thought he didn't care and didn't want the best for any kid who played for him. He touched my life and I have no doubt that many, many more were touched by him as well.

I too agree with Mr. Cather... Dennis Flanagan was the best high school running back that I have ever seen. Fast, powerful and he could read the field. After one of his many break away eighty-yard touchdown runs, he turned to where I was standing at the back of the end-zone and made eye contact with me. I can still see the humbleness and gentleness in his eyes. He was my hero then and remains so today.
