MARY DOHERTY Obituary

Doherty, Mary Sipple, born July 24, 1921 in Butte, Montana, and passed away in the home and loving care of her daughter, Patricia in Federal Way, Washington on September 19, 2010. In 1926 she and her parents moved to Porterillos, Chile where her parents worked for the Anaconda Mining Company. Early impressions of the beauty of Montana's Big Sky Country and the Chilean mountains remained in her heart throughout her life. The family returned to the states in 1933 and settled in Glendale, California. After two years at Glendale City College, she attended Cal Berkeley and graduated in 1943. Shortly thereafter she joined the United States Navy as a WAVE serving during WWII and until 1948. She was proud to be an American, and safeguarded a fierce love of country. She met and married her beloved Jack in Glendale in 1949. Mary earned a Masters degree at Chapman University in 1977, was a teacher of developmentally disabled students at Jordan School in Garden Grove, California for many years, and was active in the Garden Grove Chapter of American Association of University Women. After residing in Garden Grove for more than 30 years, she moved to Irvine. Her residence for the past five years was Federal Way, Washington. Predeceased by her husband, Jack in 1973, she is survived by her children, Kathleen Gerken (Daniel), Mary Margaret, Patricia, John (Valerie) and grandchildren, Brenna, Allyson, and Patrick Doherty. A memorial service will be held on November 6, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Unity of Tustin Church, 14402 S. Prospect Avenue, Tustin, with a reception immediately following.

Please accept my condolences. Even though your mom lived a full life, it's still tough to lose a parent...no matter how old you are. I will be remembering your family in prayer. Sincerely,
Reenie (McGowan) Dresch

I smile when I think of the time when I visited your Mom in Garden Grove. I had taught with her during the summers at Jordan Special Education and we had many mutual teacher friends. I was admiring her lovely home and furnishings and then spied the Doherty family photo on the piano in the living room. There, in the photo, was Kathleen, whom I knew from the OCCAC. It was such a small world. I will always remember your dear mother, and not just because I have a permanent remembrance of her in our home, the old, but "new", long 8' sofa, which I know, her children were not allowed to sit on it for fear that it would get dirty. She was a tiny but very strong woman. It's been a blessing to have known Mary over these almost forty years. With much sympathy to the family,

I have fond memories from my childhood of Aunt Mary, Uncle Jack and my cousins. The "Bergvall" side of the family so enjoyed your family visits. I remember your mom and I met at the Banyon Court of the Moana Hotel in Waikiki in the 'midish' 1970's where we enjoyed a drink, listened to Hawaiian music and shared fond memories. She was a very kind and special wonmen.
Fondly,

Mary was a brave and special person. I'm thankful to have known her and shared as much as we did. She lives on in my heart.
