James West Obituary

West, James P. 72 March 01, 1941 June 25, 2013 Jim West passed away June 25 at his home in Happy Valley. Jim was born March 1, 1941 in Portland to Alfred and Rose (Metzger) West. Jim was the grandson of George W. Metzger, a Gresham pioneer school teacher. He grew up in Gresham, graduated from Gresham High School and attended Portland State College. He spent 25 years in the ship-building industry working for Northwest Marine Iron Works in Human Resources and Labor Management. On July 22, 1961, he married Joyce Helen Wersch. They had met at Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company, where they both worked. They have two daughters, Kathryn and Karen. Jim had many hobbies - golf, fishing, photography, woodworking and traveling in his RV. He loved meeting new people and seeing new places. Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Kathryn West of Happy Valley and Karen Schwarz of Downingtown, Pa.; granddaughters, Addison and Tess Schwarz; his brother, Pat (Kay) West of Portland; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, in Gresham, on Saturday, July 6, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.

Jim was the kindest man. He treated everyone with kindness, respect and understanding. No one was any less in his book. All who had caring and kindness in their heart were special and loved by Jim.
The world is better to have had him among us, and lesser to be missing him now.
Thank you Jim for your kindness and belief in others. You made the world a better place.
xoxo

My deepest sympathy to Jim's family. The West's lived next door to my family when I was a child. I bought the West's former house and have been living here for 28 years now. As I look around our home I can see Jim everywhere. I especially remember him working in his garage. He was often out there building and repairing things. My brother, Ken, was particularly close to Jim. I remember Ken helping Jim build and paint a fence once. My parents Pat and Ken Cox were close to them also. Jim was a great neighbor. I played with Kathy when I was a kid and we had a lot of fun. Although I haven't seen any of them in years I think of them often with fond memories.
