Edward Ritter Obituary

Ritter, Edward G. "" Dr. Edward Gobel Ritter, 76, passed away from cancer on July 11, 2013. He was born to Fanny Newby Ritter and Edward G. Ritter in Richmond, KY, and was a 51 year resident of Winter Park. If wealth is determined by friendships, then Ed was truly a wealthy man. To the end of his life, he had great relationships with his childhood, college and Winter Park friends, and with his two beautiful wives, Gail Jennings (Winter Park) and the late Susan Smith (Vero Beach). Ed could laugh and tell a joke like no other - he truly knew how to have a great time. Growing up as an excellent athlete, he quarterbacked his Eastern Kentucky University Maroons (now EKU Colonels) for three seasons in the mid-1950's. In his later life he was widely known for his lack of golf skills, but was never without an offer of inclusion because he added fun and humor to any foursome. Ed's golf clubs will be highly coveted because he used up most of the bad shots in his bag. The good shots remain. Dr. Ritter graduated from the University of Louisville Dental School in 1960, and did his U.S. Public Health Service commitment in Tallahassee before moving to Winter Park in 1962. Here he opened a dental practice from which he retired in 2001. Ed also enjoyed his second career as a 10-year volunteer at the Winter Park Police Department, where he was loved by all the officers. Several of them referred to Ed as "one of our own." He had a huge heart, and would silently help many citizens in need. Many organizations solicited Ed's membership, and he was a key leader in several. A former president at the Winter Park Racquet Club, he was also a member of Interlachen Country Club and the Orange County Dental Society. He performed pro bono dental work for several organizations and charities over the years. Ed leaves behind a great legacy in his three children, Todd Marchant (Deana) of Vero Beach (grandsons Ritter and Tanner), Patrick J. Ritter (Vicki) of Key West (granddaughter Savannah), and daughter Page Ritter Soule (Robert) of Winter Park. Ed is also survived by his sister, Sylvia Ritter Richardson (Charles) of Raleigh, NC (niece Sylvia). Many selfless caregivers helped Ed pass in total peace and comfort. Our thanks go to all of them. A gravesite service open to all will be held at Palm Cemetery in Winter Park at 10 AM on Friday, July 19th. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Friends of WP First Responders Fund, PO Box 1240, Winter Park, FL 32790-1240.

I will forever be grateful for this wonderful man. I was 7 years old when I first started going to him as my dentist. Remembering that whistle and friendly personality kept me from being afraid. As I listen to people talk about hating to go to the dentist, I look back and am so grateful to Dr. Ritter for his love and kindness that kept this fear away from me. He knew I was emotional and he always made me laugh so I wouldn't be afraid. After all these years, I was thinking about him today and wanted to post, hoping family would be encouraged by one more that loved him! Forever grateful for this wonderful man.

Just can't stop thinking about all the good old days working for Dr. Ritter. Six days after I started, he had a birthday, Feb.16th, 1966, and he was 30 years old---WOW 30! I was 19 :-). Of course, we got him a cake from Paul's bakery and he put the whole icing rose in his mouth at once! He loved it!!
This became a tradition EVERY birthday. He was driving a little light blue Ford Falcon, when I started-I can see it now. :-). Sat. was also a work day back then, yes,8:00 till noon on Sat. My starting salary was $50, but got a raise to $60 very soon ,because Stephanie, the receptionist was making $60. What a special person and exceptional dentist. I consider myself blessed to have been there for over 5 years!

WHAT A GREAT GUY, DENTIST AND FRIEND!!!! I was 13 when I first went to him for dental work and continued until he retired. Saw him downtown WP many times and chatted, always teased him about his burgundy cars and chatted old times. When I heard of his passing I cried, I will miss him dearly. 51 years together!!! WP will not be the same anymore.

Dr. Ritter believed in hard work, good times and lots of beautiful blonds working in his office! He let me know that I was the first ever brunette to work in his office! Some of the best jokes I was ever involved with (quite by accident) won me over with Dr. Ritter~~he loved a good prank even if it was at his expense. I have so many fun and fond memories working in Dr. Ritter's office ~~being around him and all the girls, Mona, Sally, Steph and all the others, including those with Dr. Hayes. What a fine group of people .....so professional and yet such fun to be around. Rest in PEACE, Dr. Ritter. donna potter

I am so very very sad. I loved Dr. Ritter from the 1st day I became his assistant back in Feb. 1966. We worked together, "head to head" for more than 5 years on so many patients, old and young and those squirmy kids!! Those treasured memories are with me to stay. He had a lot of patience with me,being right out of Dental Assistant school---I needed hands on experience.Thank goodness he had patience!A great man, loved by so many.My sympathy to all the family, Page and Patrick----I remember you both when you were little kids & your Mom would bring you up to the office to see your Dad.Those were the good old days :-) Now Edward G. Ritter, you are whistling with the angels!

He was our family dentist for years and really missed him when he retired. Usually you don't like to go to a dentist but with him you knew you were going to have a few laughs, my husband always had jokes to share. I think they tried to outdo each other.
Bless you Dr. Ritter and family

Heaven just got alot more fun. Will always remember the twinkling blue eyes, flashing white smile and the sound of Ed cracking up with his patients. They broke the mold after that Kentucky boy was born. We all will miss him.

I just hope the heavenly gates are big enough for that wonder-filled smile and contagious laugh!
He was my dentist ("You are my absolute worst patient ever"). And I was blessed to call him a friend. I will miss his big bear hug, and Park Ave will be missing his great grin and funny stories!

He was my dentist. My mom first took me to him (had tooth extracted) in the mid sixties i believe.I can still hear him coming down the hall whistling. His shoes sounded like they had taps on them. I still have the caps on my two front teeth that he put in 1979 after my sistes knocked them out. He had wonderful way of putting you at ease;. The world needs more people like him. Just a decent man.
