Michael DiPasqua Obituary

DiPasqua, Michael lost his battle with cancer on Monday, August 29, 2016 after 63 fulfilling and versatile years. Mike was known locally for his role in helping to develop over 300 Subway Sandwich Shops in Central Florida, as well as co-founding PCMD Management Company, which owns and operates over 40 Subway franchises. Mike was also held in high regard for his contributions to the Subway brand. He was instrumental in numerous operational innovations and a leader in the Subway franchise system, but his life was so much more than Subway. Long before Mike was involved with Subway, he was a renown jazz percussionist, recording with many modern jazz greats including Jan Garbarek, Eberhard Weber, Lyle Mays, Gerry Mulligan, Ralph Towner, Dave Samuels and David Friedman. Mike played at jazz festivals around the world including Newport and Montreux. Even during his Subway career Mike continued to occasionally play and record. Mike was an avid sailor, golfer, and motorcyclist, but his greatest gift was his sense of humor. All who knew him enjoyed his instant and insightful wit, his easy ability to connect with people, and his genuine desire to laugh and make others laugh with him. His humor was constant and seemingly effortless, a gift to all around him. His family and friends will continue to be touched by the joy he gave. A loving husband and dedicated father, Mike is survived by his wife, Martina, his children, Anna and Michael Joseph, five siblings, Gayle Pryor, Donna DiPasqua (Robert Still), Curtis DiPasqua (Carol), Lynn Ganssle (Jeff), Peter DiPasqua, Jr. (Lynn), and many nephews and nieces. We all miss you. A memorial service will be held at Allen J. Harden Funeral Home, 1800 N. Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL on Friday, September 2 at 3:00 - 5:00 pm. The family has requested that donations be made in Michael's name to the Cornerstone Hospice Foundation, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778. Gifts can be made by phone by calling (352) 742-6819 or (888) 728-6234.

In the music world, in Jazz, he will be remembered as a great musician, and very original drummer and percussionist. Sincerest condolences to his family. His music is still in the air.

I heard Michael perform in 1982 with the Jan Garbarek/Eberhard Weber band. He was the most 'musically sensitive' percussionist I've ever heard, and the finest ever to have recorded on the ECM record label . His phrasing was Incredibly inventive. He had complete technical command but played the role of accompanist with perfect intuition. I've been fortunate to see the performances of many drumming 'legends', but it remains Michael's that I am the most thankful for having experienced.

One of the greatest drummers I have ever heard. Very few drummers have achieved his level of musicality, finesse, mastery of sound, time, and space. Every time I listen to a recording of Michael I am filled with gratitude that he lived and shared his unique talents with the world. My sincerest condolences to his family. May his memory be a blessing.
