Walter SLIPCHENKO Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jul. 14, 2016.
SLIPCHENKO, Walter
Walter Slipchenko passed away suddenly of arrhythmia in his home at the age of 82. He was predeceased by his father Ivan (1903 to 1972), his mother Anna (1907 to 1968) and his wife Olga Slipchenko (nee Sheremeta, 1935 to 2011). He is survived by his son Andrew and several cousins. Walter was born in Winnipeg in 1934 and grew up in that city. He attended the Canadian Military College at Royal Roads, Victoria, BC, and the Royal Military College (RMC), Kingston, ON, becoming an officer in the Royal Canadian Engineers. Upon leaving the military, he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Masters in Arts in 1966 before joining the federal public service in Ottawa. Walter had a distinguished career in the public service focused on Aboriginal Affairs and Canada's circumpolar relations. He was instrumental in developing Canada's cooperation initiatives with other Circumpolar States, and nurturing agreements with Russia on the Arctic, for which he was publicly recognized. He will be remembered by Aboriginal Peoples throughout the circumpolar world for his unwavering support, and by colleagues who benefited from his guidance and leadership. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or any research dealing with Neuropathy will be greatly acknowledged by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Marsden and MacLaughlin Funeral home, Iroquois.

Andrew, We just learned today about the sudden passing of your father, Walter. Back in the 1980's I worked very closely with Walter for several years under the Canada-USSR Arctic exchange program. As part of this program we made several trips to Russia 's north and hosted several return delegates in the NWT. I often visited Walter and Ollie at their home in Iroquois when I travelled to Ottawa and we had Walter over for supper many times when he came to Yellowknife. Walter was a committed and accomplished co-worker and a very good friend.

Both Walter and Ollie were very good friends to our family and we have many happy memories of great dinners with them in Ottawa and Morrisburg. Please know that we are thinking of you Andrew in your time of sorrow.

I have very fond memories of Walter, particularly a week long trip to Greenland we shared in 1986. A real gentleman, who will be much missed.

He offered support, guidance and leadership, absolutely. I would add a creative and open mind, but above all a kind and generous man. Condolences to the family.
