Carl Kazmierski Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2011.
KAZMIERSKI, Carl (PhD) Carl (a.k.a. Papa Kaz,, a.k.a. Deacon Dad) was called by God in the early morning of Monday, March 7, 2011. Although his life was ended by cancer it was defined by love, prayerful devotion to God, unfailing support for his family and service to his neighbour. Born and raised in Yonkers, New York, Carl came to Ottawa in 1965 to study and later work in the Religious Studies department at the University of Ottawa. He lived here the rest of his life, but for a four-year stint in Germany to complete his doctorate in theology. Whether in his vocations as husband, father, deacon of the Catholic Church (and educator of deacons), in his career as a university professor, or in his work fighting for the inclusion of mentally-challenged children, dad will be remembered as a teacher and advocate. He taught in lecture halls and in church basements; he taught from a pulpit and in a pub; he taught beside a fireplace and across the dining room table. Regardless of the venue, the lesson was always rooted in the Gospel's message of love, acceptance and inclusion. Our family is grateful for the loving support provided by so many friends during the course of dad's illness and for the superb care provided by Dr. Louise Coulombe and our wonderful team of nurses. This care and support ensured that dad could die in the home he loved surrounded by his family: Mary Anne, Vincent, Angie, Greg, Cal, Tara, Paige, Josh, Phoenix and Nerisse. He will be missed also by his sisters Joan, Maryann and Jean, sisters-in-law Angie and Pat, his brothers-in law Otto, Bob, Jim and Father John, and countless nieces and nephews in both Canada and the United States. At this time, the family has arranged a private funeral. However, Carl's students, friends and co-parishioners are invited to join us at a public memorial mass to be celebrated in June.

Dr. Carl Kazmierski taught me my first class in " Old Testament Studies " in 1966 at the University of Ottawa.
From Carl I learned to read the Word of God with the faith of a child but also with the mind of a scholar.
For this gift and for his and Mary Anne's friendship through the years, I say " Deo Gratias!"
To Carl's often stated declaration regarding God's creation of " It's a MYSTERY!" - the answer is: " Now ALL is revealed."

Dear Mary Anne and Family

I remember as a parent of a very beautiful little girl attending a workshop and hearing Carl for the very first time.
He was a very passionate speaker who talked about possibilities.
Megan spent fifteen years in the school system totally integrated with friends and all without an IPRC.

Carl's dedication gave me a chance to dream

Dear Aunt Mary Anne, Greg, Angie, Vince and families:
Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for your loss. Although you all live so far away, Uncle Carl was often in our hearts and thoughts, and he will be greatly missed. He will live on in our memories. I am so greatful that we were able to visit you all two summers ago and add to all those memories. We take comfort in knowing that Uncle Carl is now in the company of the Lord. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Much love and hugs, Janine and Rob

It is hard to believe that Carl has left us. Everyone will certainly grieve Carl’s death in his or her own way. Anne and I have such fond memories of Carl and the wonderful loving man that he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Mary Ann and your family as you grieve such a great loss. We hope all your happy memories of Carl help to ease the pain of his departure and that your faith encourages you to look forward to being together again in that place where there will be no more tears.

It is with both great sadness and pride that we reflect on Papa Kaz's life. He was a wonderful, caring, and spiritual man and we are honoured to have had him perform some of the most important ceremonies in our lives - our wedding and all our children's baptisms. We will keep his memory alive through prayer and reflection.

God Bless,

Mama Kaz and family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I would like to share that it was only a few of weeks ago Carl picked up the phone and talked to me. He was always interested in listening to the progress made in the name of integration at school of our special needs daughter Nicole. He was a pillar of strength not only for his own family, he encouraged our family as well in our quest for inclusion, even when he was not feeling well. Our family is deeply saddened about your loss of Carl and we just want to take the time to honour him. We will miss him.

We send out our love to you at this time. God Bless.

Dear Aunt Mary Anne, Vince, Angie, Greg, Tara, Cal, Paige, Josh, Phoenix & Nerisse,
Our hearts are broken for you all. Uncle Carl was such a presence, even in our life far away, that we can't imagine the void you must be feeling now. We pray that God fills your hearts with comfort & peace, as He now, has Uncle Carl with Him.
A song we sang at your wedding, Aunt Mary Anne, - This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, keeps playing in my head. Like that light, Uncle Carl's love for us all & our love for him, will always shine.
Love, hugs & prayers,
Karen and Richie
