Oswald Hall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 2, 2007.
HALL, Oswald, PhD, LLD, FRSC (18 January 1908 - 31 August 2007) Born in Lily Plains, northern rural Saskatchewan, and one of nine children, Oswald came to be one of the early members of the sociological profession in Canada. He studied at Queen's, McGill and Chicago, and taught at Brown and McGill where he served 16 years, many as chairman. Following a visiting professorship at Tulane University he joined the faculty at the University of Toronto in 1956. His primary practical research interests centred on the sociology of work and the professions, especially medicine, focusing on doctors, chiropractors and paramedical specialties. His career found him moving between the worlds of academe and government policy, and he served on both the Royal Commission on Health Services and the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. After retiring from the University of Toronto, he held sessional appointments with the University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, the University of Waterloo, the University of Guelph, Trent University and Memorial University. He enjoyed a rich and rewarding career of teaching and research in the early years of what was then an exciting and new area of academic endeavour. His colleagues and students throughout Canada honoured him with a series of published papers. His contribution to the development of sociology and Canada were also recognized through the awarding of an honorary doctorate by the University of Carleton, and membership in the Royal Society of Canada. Predeceased by his wife Florence Hall (nee Tanner). He is survived by his sister Kathleen Hamilton, his son Frank, daughter Mona (Browne), granddaughter Christina Hall, and many nephews and nieces and their children. His intellect, presence and humour are now gone, and it has created a void.

Oswald means " Divine Power".
To those who know Oswald Hall, his soul was the unique essence of Divine Power indeed.
A man of fortitude, Stealth and Grace.
I was always happy to go to work every day, knowing I would see Oswald sitting at the table.
There is no replacing Oswald in this world. Now it is up to us, to keep his light shinning.
It was an honour and a privelage for me to serve Oswald his tea each morning. I was captured by his true inner spirit, which revealed so much of his fortitude, stealth and Grace.
I don't know if I was ready for Oswald to leave this world, yet he was ready, he trusted his path ahead and now I am sad I won't see him and hold his hand in conversation any more. Yet I know in spirit, he watches over us all.
I had written a poem which resonated Oswalds' being, he said there is nothing he would change at all and validated that I had hit the nail on the head so to speak. He asked me to do it up for him. I had brought it to work to show him the finnished piece, only to find that he had left this world. He read it in its simplest form, yet I know it captured the purest essence of all his is and was.
Thank you Oswald for your kindness, validation and trueness.
Had I known you were ready to take your wings and fly home, I would have stayed by your bedside. Somehow I know you knew that. I hope you were not alone. Yet I know the Angels were with you all the way.
You will always be a light within my heart and your essence is etched within the memories of my soul.
I'll miss your Grace and presence.
Thank you for accepting me and letting me see the soul of you.
Blessings, Love and Peace
Rosy
May the sadness I feel, be overturned by the joy of knowing you are safe and no longer suffering and that you are truly Loved.
God Bless and Rest in Peace my Friend. Now you are a part of all that is everyone.
