Gordon SHIELDS Obituary
Passed away at home surrounded by the love of his family on Friday, January 17, 2014 at the age of 47 after a brave battle with cancer. Cherished son of David Shields and the late Lorna Ann (née Bowman). Beloved husband of Rhonda Rocheleau-Shields. Proud and loving father of Cameron, Liam, and Sydney. Dear brother of Colleen Macdonell (David), Stephen Shields (Angela), and Gregory Shields (Yulia). Son-in-law of Paul and Margaret Rocheleau, and brother-in-law of Kerry Rocheleau (Sean Wright). Gord will also be missed by his nieces and nephews; Caitlin, Scott, Julia, Marshal, Gregory, and Meah, and his devoted canine companion Shyla. Special thanks to Dr. Verma, nurse Tawney, Dr. Werier, and Anita McGowan whose care throughout the past four years was greatly appreciated by Gord's family. I knew Gord only as a baby. I was in my teenaged years and spent many wonderful hours along with my girlfriend, babysitting him and his older brothers and sister. It was playtime for us all. Gord and I knew each other when he worked for John on the Hill and we also worked together at SAMCI for a while in the late 90s. He always made me laugh. As many have said, he will be missed. It is with a heavy heart that I hear that Gordon Shields has passed away. I had the pleasure to meet Gordon prior to the start of the Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition, and of course to work with him from the early start-up days of the Coalition. Gordon was a strong and positive force in the pursuit of higher performance housing in Canada, and particularly in support of the vision to achieve Net-Zero Energy Housing. His energy and enthusiasm was a positive influence in helping launch CMHC's EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative in 2006, which has provided the first showcase of near- and net-zero energy housing projects across Canada. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on and the responsibility falls upon all of us to continue the pursuit of these important goals. Above all this though, a young family has lost a husband and father - my sincere condolences and best wishes go to his extended family, wife and children.

This a tough loss for the country. Condolences to family and friends. I met Gord in the earliest days of the Net Zero homes concept. We were able to strategize and I enjoyed his quick and wide intellegence. Residential is a tough political economy to take on, but he knew it was crucial. I met Gordon through the Net Zero Energy Home Coalition and joined this initiative due to his enthusiasm. He served the Coalition as a strong leader. I will miss him for his wise counsel, for his humour and as a person.
