Anne Taylor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2014.
Anne A. Taylor August 4, 1946 - June 28, 2014 After a two-year struggle with brain cancer, Anne died peacefully at home in Ottawa surrounded by her family - a profound loss to her husband, Mark Stiles, their sons, Philip and Tim, her siblings, David, Roger and Bronwen, their spouses and children, and her many friends. Anne was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec and raised in St. Lambert by her parents (predeceased), Jack and Betty Taylor. A graduate of Bishop's University in 1967 and University of Sussex in 1968, Anne taught school in Montreal and at the Dene Tha' First Nation community of Habay in northwestern Alberta before joining the National Film Board in 1975. She was the founder and co-director of the Media Awareness Network (now MediaSmarts) until her retirement in 2005 and received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for her outstanding contribution to the healthy development of children and youth. She loved children and music, which found expression most recently in her work with Ottawa's Leading Note Foundation OrKidstra program. Anne brought joy to all those who knew her. An accomplished whitewater canoeist, she spent many summers exploring Canada's wild rivers with Mark, her children and many of her dearest friends. A celebration of Anne's life will be held at First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa (http://www.firstunitarianottawa.ca/) on July 26 at 2:00 p.m. Support to Anne's favourite charities, the Leading Note Foundation, http://leadingnotefoundation.org/ and MediaSmarts, www.mediasmarts.ca would be greatly appreciated.

Saddened to hear of Anne's passing. We knew each other at Bishop's (first year), when we were both in England in 1968 - she visited my flat in London - and the years when she returned to Montreal. Anne fulfilled her potential and more. You, as her family, must be proud. She left a lasting legacy. Who can ask for more.

David, Roger and Bronwyn. I just learned of Anne's passing and am so sorry for your loss. We grew up together, even before we started school and she was always a wonderful person. So happy to have seen her at past Chambly reunions, especially the first. She will be missed, please give my condolences to her family and Lizbeth

I was so saddened to hear of Anne's death. She was a close friend at Bishop's and I have wonderful memories of our travels together in England and Greece. We were able to reconnect once when our children were young, and I am so sad to have lost touch over the years. My deepest sympathies go to all her family and friends.

This picture of Anne is how I remember her best...beautiful smile and sparkling with life. We are distant cousins...I can't remember how...and we both grew up in St. Lambert. I saw her a couple of times over the past two years as we both lived in Ottawa and you would never know she might have been stressed by what was happening to her...just her usual lovely, bubbly self. She will be much missed.

My heartfelt wishes to Mark, Tim and Philip. Anne was an inspiration and role model to me and countless others. Her vision and dedication to children and youth made a huge impact. And when I moved to Ottawa from Vancouver, where I lived when we first met, she was generous with introductions and advice. I am so sorry for your loss.

Anne was an extraordinary woman and dear friend, whom I first met on the board of the Alliance for Children and Television 24 years ago.

I am devastated to hear she was taken by the same condition my husband died of six years ago..I know what a slow and painful 2 years she must have gone through.
I will never forget her!
My thoughts and prayers are with her family,

Arlette Lefebvre, Child Psychiatrist,
Hospital for Sick Children.
