Mr. Crouch helped me develop into the person I am today. I was struggling in grade 13 Physics, with a F going into January. We had a discussion about Physics that included thinking about the problem first, then applying what we know in order to develop a solution.

I just heard about his passing today. I do not have social media, but I did want to pass my condolences onto his family members and to let them know how much I appreciated Mr. Crouch as a teacher.

Dear family,

I knew him as simply Mr. Crouch but he was more than just another teacher. He had a gift to really see and hear his students. It really saddened me to hear of his passing.

I am so sorry for your loss and I would like to convey my deepest sympathy.

Mr. Crouch was my homeroom teacher in Grade 9 (1962-63) and, as a shy new kid in school, he was incredibly kind and supportive, as well as being a terrific teacher. I will never forget him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

It was with great sorrow that I learned of Mr. Ken Crouch's passing. So sad. I have such wonderful fond memories of our times as students of his in our "special" Physics classes, when he had us doing Grade 13 Physics in Grade 12 and then university level course in Grade 13, often coming in with us after school hours to perform experiments (ripple tanks, etc). He truly made physics fun and exciting, and thanks to him, 1st yr physics at Queens was a piece of cake!
And there was that fabulous weekend retreat we had at his wonderful cottage that still stands out as one of my favourite high school memories.
He had a great spirit and was so generous with his time, and a wonderful mentor.
Thankyou, Mr. Crouch, for being you, and for passing your enthusiasm for the sciences on to so many of us. You were well loved and appreciated!

Ken Crouch was a unique, enthusiastic and committed teacher who will be remembered by all HHS students who were fortunate enough to learn from him. I am grateful for 3 years of his physics classes, for many ski trips and for his encouragement and humour. I remember particularly in 86/87 when my brother Dan and I took grade 13 physics together because Ken seemed to enjoy the friendly sibling rivalry!
Ken inspired me to pursue a career in science as he did for countless other Hillcrest students. My deepest condolences for your loss.

Dear Anne,

I just heard from Barb about Ken, so I hope this message is better late than never. I was so sorry to hear about Ken's passing, and the incredibly difficult year you have had. Barb tells me you have wonderful friends and neighbours who will support you through these difficult times. Ken was always so welcoming, and I appreciated his quiet sense of humour. I wish I had known about the "10 push ups" earlier in my teaching career. I would have put that little gem to good use! I just wanted you to now I was thinking about you.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Crouch's passing. He played a very important role in my life, though I have only recently come to appreciate it.

You know many teenagers don't recognize the mentors in the crowd of adults around them -- so pre-occupied are they with their own issues and problems. I felt pretty invisible, too, when I was a teen, during my parents' break-up and divorce. But I remember liking school -- especially science.

Imagine my surprise when I bumped into Mr. Crouch two reunions ago and heard him say that he remembered me!!! From the 1960's!! I was not only gobsmacked but deeply moved because he also said that he remembered me as a strong science student. (Interestingly, Mr. Stokoe told me the same thing at the most recent reunion.) To be remembered was special enough, but to gain an insight into the origins of a life-calling is extra special -- I continue to enjoy studying and teaching science to this day.

I know that I can thank all of my science teachers for that, even if I was not conscious of their influence. I'm sure that their example has driven my desire to share the wonders of science with kids and adults alike.

So thank you Mr. Crouch, for recognizing and nurturing a talent and a love. You helped to shape my life -- exactly what a teacher hopes to do. I am forever grateful for your inspiration and encouragement. And thank you for remembering me -- that too has enriched and changed my life.

Hi Anne;
So sorry to hear you have lost Ken.Although we have not been in contact much, I often think of you wonderful people and wonder how life was treating you. We winter in Florida so I was not able to attend the visitation and just heard the sad news through email from the Nicolls. My thoughts are with you.

We are all saddened by the loss of a very humble, kind and gentle soul who was truely an amazing teacher (actually making learning fun- no less physics!) He stood head and shoulders above,in a very rare and small class of great teachers. This is a testament of so many whose lives were priviledged to be touched and influenced by his knowledge, genuine caring, intuitiveness and enthusiasm. We are all thankful for that and celebrate his life in memories- in so many ways he will live on.
In your sorrow and great loss ,I hope this will give comfort to you Anne, his family and loved ones. My very deepest sympathies, kind thoughts and happy memories.

What a surprise it was to learn, years ago, that my husband Gwyn had attended a course with Ken at Queen's University given by Walter Thum. A great teacher and a great class.
May your memories, the service today, and these entries of many fond remembrances of a very special person bring you comfort during this difficult time.

I was very fortunate to have had Mr. Crouch as a teacher. He had a wonderful manner with his students, even those like me who did not “get” Einstein and Newton! I now model my teaching and interactions with my students with him in mind: Mr. Crouch valued and respected all learners and helped them to see their individual talents and potential in life. His love of learning and life was contagious and has had, and will continue to have, a profound effect on my life.
My most sincere and deepest condolences to the entire family.

Ken was the greatest teacher and an inspiration to us all during the early days at Hillcrest, 1963-1968. His love of science, of sports and of life drove us to do our best. We will always remember skiing and the time at Lac Heney. Ken's impact will be felt for decades to come.

Very sad to hear about Mr. Crouch. His rare gift of sharing his passion for teaching anything and always willing to listen and help made him a rare find during my school years. I only hope my children will have such a teacher during their school years. He was a true gift to all who passed through the halls of Hillcrest High School. He will be thought of for many years to come.

Dear Anne,

I'm deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my dear Beubie. Even though it has been years since I've seen you both, you're both near and dear to my heart and never far from my thoughts. My high school years were made richer by the presence of both of you in my life. Ken was the kind of incredible teacher and coach who will stay with me always. His example inspired me to be the best that I could. We're all better for having been his students. I'll never forget the times we all spent together and the way you treated me like family. I will always remember basketball parties at Mont Cascades, dinner at Le Jardin with Marcela, making strawberry pie, and golfing together. Bringing home the ashtray from Denmark as well. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ken taught me physics in the mid 60's. I learned much more from him than just the minimum velocity an object must have to leave the earth's gravity . He had a significant influence on my choice of study at university and my joy of learning about the phsical world. I was fortunate to be one of his students.

Condolences to Anne and the entire family.

I will forever remember Ken as a very special person. The sorts of memories that flood back, (mostly from three years of physics classes up to and including 1977) are of a kind man, a respectful and supportive teacher, a wise and focused leader, a passionate citizen, a generous host, a critical thinker, and an inspiring role model. Words mostly fail to describe the shining star that he was in the lives of many students and athletes. He was one of the essential ingredients of life at Hillcrest High. His example motivated many, and will travel with us a long way.

He will be missed.

Heartfelt condolences to Anne and family during this difficult period. Take comfort knowing how much Mr Crouch was truly appreciated and respected by those fortunate enough to have studied under him. He was a superb teacher; the scope of his impact on generations of students was profound.

He pushed you to go beyond your status quo, to edge out of your comfort zone. He encouraged you to have faith in your own abilities and to muster your courage to accept and face new challenges be it on skis or in his Physics classroom. He always had a smile, a kind word, a joke, a laugh to share. He was humble, positive, upbeat and forever patient.

Many times, he and Anne opened the doors of their home on the hill and warmly welcomed in a carload of tired teenaged skiers.

I will always remember Mr Crouch, frozen in time, at the top of a snowy mountain in Banff with a mischievous twinkle in his eye daring us to follow him down - "It's a piece of cookies!"

For everything, thank you Sir.

My sincere condolences to Anne and to Ken's entire family.

Mr. Crouch was a gifted teacher who has made a huge impact on the students at Hillcrest and beyond. He let us see him as a real person - a novel situation in those days, and connected with us because he truly cared. I too managed to pass physics in highschool only because of him.

He taught me to ski, something I am still enjoying all these years later. He took small groups of us to his cottage. He took an interest in us and encouraged us to think outside the box.

I am very sad to realize he is gone, so young. Anne, you should take great pride and comfort in the tremendous impact he made during his life, one smile and encouraging word at a time.

Dear Anne & Family,

I'm so very saddened by the loss of Mr. Crouch. He definitely instilled a love of Science in me and made Physics at University a breeze!
His kindness out of the classroom will never be forgotten. Our ski trip to Austria in the 80's was a trip of a lifetime!
I've even gotten over having to do push ups in front of the class on a lab bench for being late for class one morning.... :)
I have great memories and have to say that my life has definitely been enriched for knowing him.

Mr. Crouch made enriched Physics fun and interactive. He cared for us all individually and encouraged us to succeed. His love of the subject infected his students and he made daunting concepts concrete and understandable. He inspired my own teaching style, especially in the Maths and Sciences. I could only hope that I had a similar impact on my students as he had on me personally. He was one of the best! I will miss him! Erin (Fairweather) Ross (Ottawa, ON)

My deepest sympathy to Anne and family.

I was a Class of '68 Hillcrest student and was so fortunate to have Mr. Crouch as my teacher. I know that I wouldn't have passed Physics or Chemistry without his help. Yes, he did teach Chemistry and I remember hearing that he brushed up on his Chemistry that summer so that he could teach our class (12D). He genuinely cared for his students and always had a smile. His influence was amazing. Everybody admired him.

A group of us was treated occasionally to a Dairy Queen milk shake following Hillcrest basketball games. We had 11D/12D get-togethers at his cottage at (I believe) Lac Poisson Blanc. I will never forget those times.

Good-bye Mr. Crouch. You were the best. I will always remember you and am indebted for every mark you found for me so that I could pass.

My Crouch was my physics teacher in '75 - 77. I always looked forward to his classes and seeing him in the hall - his big smile, gentle eyes and kind words always made me feel special. It is so nice to see all the positive comments about him - they are well deserved.

I too was disappointed he was not at the reunion in May, and wondered if it was health issues that kept him away. So sorry to have not seen him there.

We should all cherish the fond memories and feel blessed that he was a part of our lives.

He will always have a special place in many people's hearts.

My deepest condolences to the entire Crouch family.

I would like to add my memories of Mr. Crouch as one of the most influential teachers of my life. Although it has been 26 years since my last class with him, I can easily recall his smile, the sound of his voice as well as his chalk covered hands (and face) at the end of a lesson. Beyond that, I can remarkably still recall the content of his lectures, his way of explaining things, as well as the humor (and challenge) of his 11E and M5E quizzes. He had the amazing ability to make every person in his class feel special regardless of their ability. He helped you understand the material, but also gave you enough room to learn on your own. You wanted to master the material for yourself but also for him in a way. In summary, he was everything that a great teacher should be. It does not surprise me that in spite of a career in medicine, I retain a special place in my heart for Physics.

Although I had not seen Mr. Crouch for a number of years, news of his passing struck me very deeply. Reading the wonderful tributes and seeing the similar feelings of colleagues, friends and students that he reached over the decades, does soothe the sadness to some degree.

Thank-you so much, Mr. Crouch. You will always be with me.

My sincere condolences go to the family of Ken Crouch.

In my years as a student, teacher and school administrator, I have had the pleasure of associating with many excellent teachers. However, Ken stands above all others. He was a teacher who valued and liked his students. He knew his subject and communicated an infectious enthusiasm for it. Ken was my inspiration for going into education, he obviously enjoyed what he was doing and earned the respect of his students. I would like to think that there was a little bit of Ken Crouch in every science lesson that I taught.
Ken made a difference in my life and in the lives of countless others. The waves that he generated are still spreading. He left this world a far better place than he found it.

January 2, 2012

My deepest sympathies to all that were touched by Kens' life. I have such great memories of basketball, 40 mile walk, physics, and skiing. Ken sure left a mark on many and I was one of them. We all do celebrate his life .and are thankful we shared a piece of it. Norma (Berger) Gillan Vancouver B.C.

My condolences to Anne and the entire Crouch family.

Ken will be remembered so fondly by all, for he was blessed with a natural ability to teach. He believed, as I did when I became a teacher, that an educator teaches students first and the subject second. Ken touched the lives of so many, students and teachers alike. There is no doubt that “he made a difference”! Ken will, indeed, be missed.

He was a leader among the science department heads of the Ottawa Board of Education, someone who was always listened to with respect. I had the pleasure of being his student when he was an old man of 28 or 29. While I remember very little, if any, of the physics he taught, there was one life situation which I remember to this day. Our condolences to Anne & all of Ken's family. So many people asked about Ken at the Hillcrest High School reunion. He was certainly one of the longest teaching and most popular teachers at the school.

Had Ken been able to participate at the 50th Anniverary, we know he would have enjoyed it thoroughly, and received a standing ovation at the opening assembly introductions (along with Mr. Hayes & Mrs. Bozilov). There were so many photos of him and kind memories in the Decades Memorabilia room.

During the planning of the reunion, and searching for alumni/teachiers - Ken's name came up more than any other.

To the Crouch Family
So sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Crouch. His name is synonymous with quality teaching and Hillcrest was so fortunate to have him as a physics teacher. I remember when Ken first came to Hillcrest to teach (I graduated in 1964) and even though he was never one of my science teachers, it's his name that is most frequently mentioned in conversations with my fellow graduates. Ken's positive impact on students was profound--in the classroom and beyond. My sincerest sympathies to the family.

I would like to add my positive memories of Mr. Crouch teaching physics to my classmates and me in the late 70's. He had the magic to make an incredibly difficult subject easy and fun. I also remember spending a day at his cottage. What a truly generous soul.

I now have a son in grade 12 physics, and he's finding it very difficult. If only he had Mr. Crouch! To Mr. Crouch's family, I hope that you can find comfort knowing that he had such a positive effect on so many people.

Mr Crouch was, to quote a tv show, Legend-wait for it-dary! He was such a pleasant teacher and made learning so much fun that I pushed to get into his class even though I was out of my depth of knowledge. Very sad to hear if his passing and my condolences to the extended Crouch family. Take comfort and happiness in knowing he touched the world and had an great impact. On many lives.

My deepest condolences to the Crouch family.

Mr. Crouch is the one I credit with my early love of Physics. His kindness and wisdom as a teacher gave us the room and confidence to grow our minds and enjoy our personal successes. His legacy as an educator casts a long shadow through all those who were fortunate enough to be in classroom. I will be forever appreciative of his impact on my life.

To the Crouch family and friends, my deepest condolences. Mr. Crouch was my physics teacher in grades 11 & 13 in the early 80's. Besides being a smart man, he was considerate and helpful. I will remember him as one of my best teachers.

I had Mr. Crouch for 3 years as a student at Hillcrest and always enjoyed his classes. He has crossed my mind over the years even though I graduated in 1983. He did make an impact on hundreds of students and as such will never be forgotten. We will remember him as we thumb through our old year books. Condolences to the family....

Perhaps a bit of humour: In grade 13,(1966) Ken asked my buddy Bob MacDonald and me why we were taking physics since we were obviously not stellar students in the subject. We looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders, dropped the course, along with our ambitions in the sciences, graduated and had successful business careers.Good council, Ken. God bless.

Ken was my physics teacher back in the early-70s. He was a kind and patient man; Hani Shrukrallah and I almost blew up his lab twice and Ken never even raised his voice as he extinguished the mayem we both caused. God Speed Ken! My thoughts are with you and your family. Paul Taylor (son of Chuck Taylor)

Mr. Crouch was one of my greatest and most memorable teachers, and a huge inspiration. He was a truly unique character who taught with such enthusiasm, and passed his enthusiasm on to his students. We thank you, and we will miss you Ken. (Hillcrest 71-74)

After all these years, I would have recognized him on the street. Still the same kind eyes and smile.

Ken taught me in the early 60's. He gave it his best shot; however I was never going to grasp physics!!

My condolences to the family. His passing leaves a hole in your family and in the world of people who make a difference to others.

To Ken's family :
I taught with Ken at Hillcrest in the late 60's and early 70's. I have seldom met a more gentle and loving teacher, friend and mentor. I am sure that his Reward will be great. As others have said, he was a born teacher who truly loved his job and his students. His mark is on a great many young, and not-so-young, people in the Hillcrest area.I join a host of friends and in mourning his loss, and hope for much comfort for his family.
Go with God, Ken. Chuck Taylor and family.

Ken was an outstanding individual and an exceptional teacher. It was a measure of his fine qualities that he was so well liked by his students in addition to being respected as a professional.

He is already greatly missed.

Ken was an inspiration to everyone. Always had a smile on his face and words of encouragement. I had the privilage of playing basketball for him at Hillcrest in the late 60's and also in his Physics class for grade 11.
I know he will be missed but his spirit will live on forever.

Dear Anne.

My sincere condolensces.

Mr. Crouch was my physics teacher at Hillcrest in 1983. He was one of the best teachers that I ever had. His incredible enthusiasm and huge smile was infectious.

The love he gave me for physics is now being passed along to my 17 yr old son and my only regret is that he does not have a teacher nearly the caliber of the one I had.

He will always be fondly remembered by me and so many of his former students.

To the family of Mr. Crouch,
I am saddened to hear that Mr. Crouch has died. Mr. Crouch unfortunately did not teach me but when he arrived as a very young teacher, everyone recognized him as a most caring and talented teacher. His warm smile and youthful enthusiasm set him apart. Mr. Crouch had the unique ability to make students feel confident and positive about themselves even when they struggled with the subject he taught so well. My sister was so fortunate to have Mr. Crouch as her physics teacher.

May you always know and be comforted by the positive impact Mr. Crouch had on the lives of the students he taught and helped. I attended Hillcrest in 1961 to 1964, in grades 11 to 13.

I was disappointed when Mr. Crouch was not at the 50th Reunion in May but was sure illness was the reason he could not be there. Sadly my conclusion was correct.

With sincere sympathy,

Diana Usher Simpson
