M. ADAMS Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Nov. 14, 2012.
ADAMS, M. Eleanor
(nee Stead)
Slipped away peacefully at home on Nov. 8, in her 98th year. Beloved wife of the late Victor, adored mum of Mary and Beverly (Ron Ensom), proud grammie of Molly, Tim and Paul, kind sister-in-law of Pauline Strang. Predeceased by sisters Mary, Barbara, Nancy and Elizabeth. Born in Saskatoon during WWI, raised in Toronto during the Depression, interrupted early in her career by WWII (and a handsome man from B.C.), Eleanor became an in-Canada war bride as Vic was stationed at various air bases, in a tumultuous era of heartbreak and hilarity. Later, as Vic represented the National Film Board in Europe, Eleanor played the diplomatic spouse with skill, grace and humour. In the 1960s, when feminism told her she could do it all, she returned to work at the National Capital Commission in Ottawa; then retired to volunteerism, tennis and adventures with Molly, Tim and Paul. After Vic died, Eleanor and her sister Barb lived at Billings Lodge, where kind folks cared for her as her health declined. A role model to the very end, Eleanor was practical, wise, warm, fun, gracious, vibrant, smart, easy-going, elegant - the adjectives are flowing in from friends and family. Funeral Thursday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m., at St. Thomas Church, 2345 Alta Vista Drive. In memoriam donations to Centre 454 or Christie Lake Kids would be appreciated.
