Suzanne KNOWLTON Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Mar. 18, 2013.
KNOWLTON, Suzanne
1942 - 2013
On Saturday, March 16, 2013, surrounded by her family, after a 3 year battle with cancer which she fought with the same strength, courage, resiliency, grace, style and humour with which she lived her life. Suzanne was the companion, confidante and soulmate to Peter, an extraordinary, loving, "hands on" mother to Nicole (Shaun) and Bill (Candace), an engaged and guiding Grandmaman to Michelle, Kendall, Peter and Camryn. Her full and fruitful personal life was paralleled by her exceptional life as a teacher and educator. She started her teaching career in Toronto, where she became the youngest High School Head of Department in Ontario's history. She interrupted her career to be a full-time mother and then resumed it at Elmwood School in Ottawa where she spent many happy years as a teacher, golf and ski coach (going to OFSSA), IB coordinator, and Vice Principal. After her "retirement" from Elmwood she spent 12 full years until shortly before her death as a consultant throughout North America, Asia and the Middle East. She was instrumental in setting up the IB Program at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong and rewriting the curriculum and obtaining international certification for Sheik Zayed Acadamy in Abu Dhabi. Suzanne was quick to smile and laugh. She was a unique, extraordinary, brilliant, wise, fun loving and generous human being who lived life to the fullest. She will live on in the indelible imprint which she has left on her family, her friends and countless teachers and students throughout the world. We will not see her like again. Rest in peace Suzanne after a lifetime of achievement. The family thanks the nurses and doctors of the General (8W) and Bruyere (5B). Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Tuesday, March 19th from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday, March 20th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Meagan's Walk, www.meaganswalk.com, a charitable foundation for pediatric brain tumour research.

I have so many happy memories of Suzie! We were students in the same classes for 10 years, starting in 7th grade at Saint Francis, with Sister Gerard of the Cross. St. Mary's Academy was our next stop. We were both in the Special French classes and Suzie was the best student in the entire school, bar none. I was her campaign manager when she ran for school office; our theme was rockets and I can still picture Suzie with her headgear and cape! We laughed all the time! The most fun was on weekends, at Suzie's house on Sunset (my street, too). We'd hang out with Johnnie, Chris, Weezie, Michelle and Denise. K and I named our daughter Michelle (Michou) after Michelle! In the summer, we'd all be at the cottage and life was good. Claire was the kindest, friendliest hostess there was! Our prayers and our thoughts go out to you,and your children and grandchildren, Peter, and to all the sibs. With love,
Anne-Marie T. Finger Chicago

Mme Knowlton led students by example; by caring deeply for us, by believing in our capacities, and by challenging us to reach high, she brought out the best in each life she touched at Elmwood. I am very thankful to have known her. Merci, Mme Knowlton!

With all our IB friends I want to add my thanks for her gracious giving educational life that impacted not only children, but also we educators. IB Americas was better because she made it so.

Suzanne was a good, good friend and valued colleague. My favorite memory was when she and I went to SEBIQ and hammered out an understanding that is still in effect. We will all miss her.

Mme. Knowlton was a teacher full of integrity, values and morals which was present in her dedication to teaching students and helping them reach their potential in their studies. It was an honor to have been her student, and I vividly remember her never giving up on me, when it came to understanding a concept. She taught me to persevere and be strong.

Elmwood was fortunate to have her as a teacher.

I was so sad to hear of Mme. Knowlton's passing. She was my french teacher in Gr. 4, 10 and 11 as well as a wonderful guide throughout my leadership endeavours. She held the bar high so that I and my fellow students could aim to be the best. She truly was a wonderful leader and inspiration.

I was so sad to hear of Mme. Knowlton's passing. She was a beloved teacher of mine from my days at Elmwood, and I only recently learned that we lived around the corner from each other when I stopped at her house to trick-or-treat with my children this past Halloween. She was an incredible teacher and a wonderful person. My deepest sympathies go out to her family at this time.
