Theodore Geraets

GERAETS, Theodore 1926 - 2017 University of Ottawa Professor Emeritus of Philosophy passed away suddenly but peacefully at 91 years of age at the Ottawa General Hospital December 21, 2017. Beloved husband of Heidi Geraets, cherished father of Dr. Isabelle Geraets-Rose (Tim Rose) and Stephanie Geraets (Kirk Lum). Proud Grandfather of Martin Geraets-Rose, Vivian Geraets-Rose, Katherine Lum and Alexandra Lum. He will be remembered by family (Canadian, Dutch, British), friends, former students and colleagues in philosophy and theology, friends in The First Nations community, as well as cottage owners for his initiative, leadership, mentorship, and ongoing commitment to an optimistic vision of Canada. One in which education and ideas are valued, there is equality amongst all citizens and in the constitution, as well as protection of the environment (including his 31 Mile Lake) for future generations. He was born in Den Haag, studied as a Jesuit in Italy and England and then in theology and philosophy in Holland and France. He began his career at Saint Paul University. He spoke 5 languages. His interests in The Arts included visual art, dance, and literature. He embraced new technologies such as Twitter. He was an inspiration to so many here in Canada and abroad. Memorial Service to be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 270 Crichton Street, Ottawa, December 30, at 11 a.m. Following the service, the family invites you for food and fellowship in the hall next door. Private family interment at Beechwood Cemetery to be held in the summer of 2018.
