Donald QUIRING Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from May 16 to May 18, 2013.
QUIRING, Donald David
Donald David Quiring passed away peacefully on May 12 following a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves to mourn: his wife of 25 years, Penny Reedie; his daughter Lisa (Robin Dewe); grandchildren Thomas, Evan and Kristin, all of Ottawa, and; sisters Gladys Jeeves and Verna Irving of British Columbia. He will be missed by many friends in Canada and New Zealand, and fellow thespians at the Ottawa Little Theatre. Don led a rich, full and rewarding life. He was born in Saskatoon in 1935, and graduated with a commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. Don had a successful career in the military, and as a young officer lived in Antwerp for four years before returning to Canada and moving with his young family to Edmonton, Calgary, London, Montreal and Toronto. As a senior executive with the federal public service, first with the Bureau of Management Consulting, then Consumer and Corporate Affairs, and the Public Service Commission, he lived in Winnipeg and Quebec City before settling in Ottawa. Don's career took him and Penny to New Zealand from 1987-1989; then Penny's career took them back to New Zealand from 2005-2009. His love of theatre saw him perform for 35 years at the Ottawa Little Theatre, as well as other theatres in Ottawa, Halifax and Wellington, New Zealand. Performing was his passion, as was golf. He was also a raconteur extraordinaire. Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral service, as Don wished. A Celebration of Don's Life will take place next week. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]

Dear Penny: We send you our deepest sympathy for Don's passing and our thoughts are with you now as they have been over the past months as Don's courage shone through, along with his love for you. The Don we knew so well was characterized by his sense of humor, his sense of curiosity and generosity of spirit to this around him. His love of life came through in everything he did, especially in the theatre and in his partnership with you. We regret not being able to be with you but will see you soon when we return from Spain.

My sincere sympathies to Don's family. Don and I were classmates through high school and university in Saskatoon. I regret that our paths have not crossed since but I am grateful to learn about his very interesting and fulfilling life. Don is warmly remembered by this friend from his youth.

Don gave me the opportunity to expand my management career and was always supportive in the most positive way. A truly creative and dynamic person, always searching for solutions outside the box. My condolences to the family.
