Dearest Aldo, Mico and family: I was shocked to learn of Antonino's recent passing from my sister. Antonino and I first met in 1961 after he arrived at St. Agnes elementary school from San Roberto, Calabria when we were in grade seven together. While I was instructed with the responsibility of helping him read English we became friends. Later we studied English in high school at Ottawa Tech with Eustace Jackson and Italo Tiezzi. After I left to study English at UoT/OCA we lost touch, however after he moved to Toronto where we reconnected at poetry readings and cultural events after I became the Creative Director of Maclean's magazine and various publishing houses a chance meeting in Kensington Market in 1993 reconnected our friendship. After he returned to Ottawa we gradually lost touch, again although we kept in touch over the phone and internet and apprised each of our work and various poetry projects. As we are the same age, for me, Canada has lost a unique talent by far too soon. Laurel and I send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. - ciao paesano.

Dear Franceline and Mico,
Antonino was a grand spirit. Ever since meeting him at the 'Merica Conference in Rome in 2003, we have kept up a correspondence around art and poetry. His work inspired some of my own writing, and despite my deep sadness at his passing, I am very appreciative that his legacy of poetry, translating and teaching will continue to bear fruit in the future. He was a man of rare integrity, passion, and insight. Mille Grazie, Antonino, for the life that you lived and so generously shared.
Condoglianze profonde alla famiglia ed abbracci fortissimi,
B. Amore

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I am so saddened to learn of Antonino's passing and to think that his sonorous voice and wonderful gift to Canadian and Italian poetry is now silenced. I first met him in at the reading for the anthology, Roman Candles, and then worked alongside him on the editorial board of Ottawa Revue/Anthos. I last saw him fittingly at a recent TREE reading he and Mary di Michele, one of the other poets in that famous anthology, gave her in Ottawa. Although not comparable to the loss his family must feel, the poetry community in Ottawa is diminished by the loss of a wonderful mentor and presence.

My deepest sympathies to the family. He was a good friend and a pleasure to talk with. His passion for teaching, writing and translating made him memorable to all who were blessed enough to know him. RIP ANTONINO...I'm sure he is dancing la tarantella in heaven making great coffee for everybody. Until we meet again my friend.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of this lovely man and beloved teacher. I only knew him briefly when I took an Italian summer course at Carleton University. In that short time one thing was very clear to me: he had a genuine passion for teaching and was fully invested in his student's success. He fostered not only a love of the language but an interest in the culture as well by encouraging us to attend cultural events and poetry readings. I will never forget his class and will always look back on him fondly. The Carleton community and future students of Italian have lost a gifted and caring teacher.

Antonino was a fine man and a good colleague. I truly enjoyed his poetry, and his translation and treatment of the diary on Italian-Canadian internment, 'City without Women', made a great impression and taught me a lot. I am very sad to hear he was ill and has passed away. My deepest condolences to his family

to the Famiglia Mazza, Antonino was an original. His style, his talent and his love of family and friends and his humour. No none wore linen like Antonino. In the 70's we were young and filled with dreams and poems. Thanks Antonino for sharing the words and the passion. You will be missed.

To Franceline, Mico, Aldo and Gianna and families.
I feel your loss.
To know that his words and poems and creativity will live on is a blessing.
He touched so many and left an indelible mark that will live beyond any of us.
He added to this universe on so many levels. Made the world better.
His job is done here. he is needed above to continue his work with the Lord.
May God bless you all.
