Francis Neering Obituary

Francis J. "Frank" Neering, 92, of Bay City, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the Toni & Trish House after a long battle with cancer. He was born to the late Charles Emil and Mary (Charlebois) Neering March 8, 1922, in Bay City. Frank was a graduate of St. John's High School, Essexville, Bay City Business College and the Harvard University Management Development Program.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (now Air Force) in the Pacific as a Sergeant with the 7th Bomber Command during World War II. Frank was employed by The Dow Chemical Co. for 44 years. He retired in 1985 after holding management positions in several departments, including Government Affairs and Labor Relations, where he was a chief contract negotiator.

Frank was a member of St. Joseph Church of Bay City. Frank enjoyed gardening, golf and traveling, and was an avid horse enthusiast, who enjoyed riding and raising horses, and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He was also an accomplished bridge player, belonging to the ACBL, achieving the rank of Bronze Life Master.

On June 13, 1942, he married the former Beatrice Sundquist, who preceded him in death Aug. 30, 1994.

Frank is survived by his children, Mike (Jean) Neering, Sue Shaffer and Barb (Jeff) Hunt; his special longtime companion, Colleen Smalley; grandchildren, Craig (Jessica) Neering, Amy (Lance) Dandliker, Kirstie (Billy) Anderson, Jackie Shaffer and Kyle Neering; great-grandchildren, Jordan Perkic, Abigail Perkic, McKinley Dandliker, Kendall Dandliker, Cayden Anderson, Cavin Anderson, Lyla Anderson and Tyler Neering; brother, Ken (Sally) Neering; niece, Deb Diven; nephew, Chuck Neering; and his three beloved horses, Lucky, Goldie and Dutchess.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Neering; and his second wife, Rose Neering.

Special thanks to the Toni and Trish House for the compassionate care they gave to Frank.

The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Monday, May 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 1005 3rd St., Bay City, Mich. Frank will lie in state in church Monday after 10 a.m. The Rev. John Sarge will preside, with interment following in Oak Ridge Cemetery with military rites provided by the Bay County Veterans Council.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Toni and Trish House, St. Joseph Church, American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice. Visiting hours will be Sunday, from 2-8 p.m., with the Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m., at the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel, 256 N. Madison Ave., Bay City, MI. www.trahanfc.com

My heart was saddened to hear of Frank's passing. I met Frank a little over 30 years ago - (back when he had another beloved horse 'Big Red'). Frank was such a nice, kind and gentle sole with a great sense of humor! I'm glad I was able to see him a few years ago (at a Midland Fairgrounds horse show - where else? - smile) He will be greatly missed.

Sue, Barb, Mike, I was so hoping to come and say a prayer over your Dad and to pay my last respects to him. And, most importantly, I wanted to give you all a hug to help ease your loss and to share my memories of how your Dad impacted my life. Two things I remember the most was his deep laugh/chukle and smile that always made me smile when I heard it. And, I remember he and I and my parents sitting at our kitchen table and your Dad was trying so hard to convince me that I needed to apply to Dow for employment. I was 17 and so not into working for a big company LOL. Now, 37.6 years later, I retired from Dow after a successful career and find myself still working for them part-time....I think he'd get a chuckle out of that '-). Unfortunately, however, I spent most of yesterday and then last evening in the emergency room with a migraine headache and upset stomach. Even this morning, I'm still feeling pretty yucky so I won't be able to attend. I'm so sorry '-(. Please know I'm sending my love to all of you.

I am so saddened to hear of his passing. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be this involved with horses as he allowed my grandmother and I to come to the barn and ride. Thank you, Frank. RIP

Mr. Neering and his wife Bea were great friends of my parents for many years. In fact, my mom was a bridesmaid in their wedding. I will never forget "Aunt" Bea's unwavering support and care for my parents during my dad's cancer illness. Mr. Neering's easy manner and beautiful smile are special memories for me. I am so sorry for your great loss.
