Charles Sercu Obituary

Loving father, loyal friend, and guide to many, Charles L. Sercu Jr., 88, passed away Jan. 15, 2015. He was born March 30, 1926.

Charlie was a veteran of World War II, a graduate of Manhattan College in New York City (Sanitary Engineering) and received a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and supported his church all his life.

Charlie retired from The Dow Chemical Co. after 35 years as Dow's first Global Director of Environment, Health and Safety. He was a true environmentalist. He not only sought to protect the environment but also the life and livelihood of those who resided there. He was proud of Dow's 95 years of environmental concerns. He stood tall in the knowledge that he and the people with whom he worked, led, coached and laughed made a positive environmental impact.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Holland) Sercu; his children, Mary Pat (Jack) Randall, Thomas (Collette), Michael, James (Sherrie), Mark, Joanne (Kurt) Tarhan, Tonya McCurley, Shonda Ratcliff; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 51 years, Margret Helen (Mooney) Sercu.

The funeral service will be held at Saint Paul the Apostle Church, Seneca, S.C., Monday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m., with the family receiving viewing beginning at 11 a.m.

The family requests no flowers, but donations may be made to Cuttinham Hospice House in Seneca, S.C.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
