As I get ready to turn 60 myself, I recall what a special day that was when Andy took me, an unknown critical care doc just starting out, to a classic diner diner w aluminum siding near the SCCM convention where we had met. There we both had burgers and talked about critical care leadership in community hospitals. It was an inspiring day and the kind of experience I like to pay forward.

Andy reached out and gave me a chance to work on projects through the Society of Critical Care Medicine, just to be helpful. He was an expert in what he did, but worked in the background doing stuff like this to help others. A really nice guy... I'll remember him fondly.

Andy was the consummate critical care physician. He was a leader in this field, being the third to become the Director of Critical Care Medicine at Baptist Hospital.
Professionaly he was totally devoted to this specialty. With his leadership we were on the forefront. He led the way in implementing the Apache scoring system for critically ill. Early on he recognized the potential of computers, developing a patient information kiosk for the families of patients. He was key in supporting the annual critical care patient reunion, bringing patients and familes who had gone through critical care together for a celebration of their recovery.
He had a keen interest in medical ethics, serving on the ethics committee. He attended an ethics developmental program at the University of Virginia along with a nurse who became our first "Nurse Ethicist".
His leaving us so soon is a great loss.
Health care and those of us who knew him are enriched by his having come our way.
My condolences to his family and fiance.
God bless,
Charlotte C Dison, RN

I'm extremely saddened to hear of Dr. Egol's passing. I didn't have the privilege of meeting him in person but he recently contacted me via email with interest in purchasing one of my paintings. In our last communication I let him know that I wanted to send the painting to him as a gift of healing but unfortunately I didn't hear back from him. If anyone can have his fiancee or a member of the family contact me at [email protected] I would love to give the painting to his family as it was something he really wanted. God Bless.

WOW;I can only hope my family/friends can give similar accolades about me when my time is up:)....Dr. Egol[who I knew as "andy"]was so humble that "I" never knew he was a doctor;we were simply friends,on equal footing.

I corresponded professionally with Andy several times and was struck by his willingness to help a stranger he had never met. I'm very sorry he's gone.

I wil always remember Dr. Egol as the person who took me under his wing when I started at the Stat Lab at Baptist in 1986. He expected nothing less than the very best from his staff, which pushed us to strive for excellance in care. He always took the time to teach and always encouraged me to keep learning. Thank you Dr. Egol

Dr. Egol will be deeply missed for those of us who had the pleasure of working with him at Baptist Hospital in Miami during his 20+ year tenure. I was among one of the very fortunate nurses that he molded in his likeness. He expected excellence and that is what we became. He was ahead of his time in evidenced based medicine and ran the ICU extremely efficiently. I will miss him because he listened to our dreams for the future, had fun and expertly guided us through medical experiences he so willingly shared his knowledge. My heart and prayers go out to his family, fiance and friends who he shared so many wonderful stories about. He made an impression on so many in so few years. I will cherish all the memories.

Just a thought on Dr. Andrew Egol who contributed much and was taken too soon.
I knew them once very well
through memories of times and places spent,
through myriads of conversations remembered.
Time spent telling and retelling
hopes and ambitions, feelings and futures.
Validating moments-
shaping who we were, and who we would become.
It was all important then.
But with time, circumstances become different, memories become encumbered.
I no longer know them today.
Yet, those moments remain even more important- now.

Rare are the moments in life when a person enters yours and leaves you with everlasting memories.
That person for me was Andrew Egol.
When I think of him a million great qualities come to mind.
I admired his dedication to his patients.
I admired him for the great love in his heart for his children Jessica and Jared.
I admired his love for life and never forgetting how to have fun.
When I think of Andy, I think of how fortunate I am to have known him.
Hold close to your heart those memories and he will never be gone.

I echo the words of my classmate Katie. Andy had a wide circle of friends. I met Andy when we were both 6 years old and we bonded instantly. It is my great regret that we did not rekindle that once strong friendship. We have an extraordinary class. Many of us have remained friends for over 40 years. Andy will be greatly missed.
