Virginia Waters Obituary

Virginia Mozingo Waters Virginia Mozingo Waters passed away in the early morning hours of October 4, 2010, at the age of 91. Born in Dodge Center, MN on September 10, 1919 she moved with her family to Long Beach in 1931 graduating from Woodrow Wilson High '37 before going on to receive a B.A. from Occidental College '41. Always vivacious and popular she took part in many clubs and sororities while on both campuses. A former school teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District, she married Dr. Franklin Waters in 1944 and they went on to raise 3 children together. An early supporter of civil rights and women's rights, Virginia was always active in the community serving as president of the Junior League '55 and running for political office 4 times. She took pride in opening her home for political and charitable events entertaining such notables as Richard Nixon, Dr. Spock, Aaron Copeland and Mary Pickford. Her philosophy towards charity was hands on, often going out of her way to assist friends and acquintances in need. She was a dynamic individual who left an indelible mark on all who met her and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Pathways to Independence, P.O. Box 43, Los Alamitos, CA 90720. A memorial was held privately. She is survived by a son, Daniel; a daughter, Camilla Gagen; a sister, Donna; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Waters opened her home to me as a part of a scholarship program I received in 1969. I lived with her for a year which made a significant difference in my life. She was such a kind and brilliant and extraordinary soul who was always way of her a time. Fortunately,we were able to reconnect around 2000-2001 and I was able to visit her just prior to 89th birthday. I owe her an immeasurable debt for her altruism. My sympathy goes out to Daniel and Camilla whom I also knew.

For our wedding present, (way back in the 70's), Auntie Virginia gave my husband and I separate checks for the same sum, and both checks were made out to the Junior League Rummage Sale. We were married in June but had to wait until November that year to get our presents--at the sale. Virginia certainly was a creative force, and she knew how to the support the causes and people she believed in. We will always miss her. Stevie Paul, Long Beach, CA
