Thank you for your performances with all the famous cats. I´m from Minneapolis and have long since been away. Hope you enjoyed your stay.

Herbie, I did not realize that over 10 years have passed since you passed away in 2007. You taught me bass when I was in the SF area back in 90s. You were with me when I got married with my wife Melanie in 1998. As a matter of fact, you were a part of our wedding! Do you remember Pastor Brown did not show up until 30 min. before the wedding ceremony???
I miss you so much, Herbie. Now we are back in Japan as a family. We have three kids now, Josie (16), Josiah (12) and Julia (7). And I stil play the bass. And recently I started writing Amazon reviews on CD of the Jazz albums which you played, perhaps as the only Japanese who studied with you, one of the greatest bass player. With my respect and honor, I share what you taught me with other Japanese jazz fans.
And someday, I shall see you in heaven. I remember we went to church together in SF.
Thank you, Herbie. I cannot wait to play basses together again...

PS: Only once, Herbie told me that he had a daughter then. Please contact me, Ms. Kendall Lewis, if you read this message. Write me at ahiraguri#hotmail.com (please replace the # with an at mark). I want to share my memory of him with you...

My sincere sympathy to all who loved Herbie. The world of music has lost the deeper tones. Our deceased son, Jeffrey, continues to live in our hearts. Daughter, Kendall, her daughter, Jha'nee and her granddaughter, Kalei are truly soulfull as you would say. May God hold you close.

To My Father,
We shall all miss you. Thank you for my life and my wonderful family. I have been so loved and have many great memories. I know you are resting in God's arms. You, Jeffrey and Mama have to be "cutting up" playing wonderful music together. Two Doves sat in my backyard on Saturday and Jeffrey's charm just rang and rang. I think of all of you when I look at Mama's piano in my living room. I hope to inspire your soon to-be- great granddaughter to play and love music as you all did. She comes from a legacy of great musicians. You will always in my thoughts.
With God's love,
Your daughter,
Kendall Kaye Lewis
