Fellie Robinson

1918 - 2010

LT. COL. FELLIE FRED ROBINSON USAF retired Died Sept. 23, 2010 at the age of 91. Fred was born Oct. 11, 1918 in Dinuba, California, the son of Naomi and Fellie Fred Robinson, Sr. and brother of Freda and John. He attended Fresno State, Los Angeles City College and UC Berkley before entering the Army Air Corps in March of 1941. He married La Verne Hinkle from Redlands, CA on Dec. 7, 1941 the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed. They were married for over 62 years when La Verne passed away. He leaves behind a daughter, Judith Collins in Vista, CA; a son, Mark Robinson in Alabama; and daughter, Virginia Robinson in San Bernardino; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Another son, Richard Robinson, from Arkansas, preceded him in death in 2007. Fred served his country honorably in WWII, the Korean War, and in Viet Nam where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He flew 50 missions over the "Hump" in India carrying dangerous loads of hi-octane gasoline in a C-46 for Chenault\'s Raiders. Fred was a qualified pilot, navigator, bombardier and weather forecaster. His first love was flying. One of his assignments was as commanding officer of the Hurricane Hunters at Kindley AFB in Bermuda. He retired after 27 years in 1968, and then earned his doctorate in Law. He and La Verne were residents of Redlands until 2004 when he moved to Apple Valley to live with his daughter, Judith, and son-in-law, William Collins. He then moved with them when they moved to Vista in 2009 to be closer to children and grandchildren. He will be buried with his wife at the Riverside National Cemetery. He was a member of the Daedalians, a military pilots\' fraternity, the Hump Pilots, Order of the Purple Hearts, and the Air Weather Service Assn. It is the loving wish of his family that the angels of God will fly with him to a home in paradise.
