Tony Hernandez

1938 - 2010

TONY A. HERNÁNDEZ Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and soon to be great-grandfather was surrounded by his family as he passed away due to congestive heart failure at St. Bernadine\'s Hospital 10/17/10. Tony was born in Mentone CA 11/14/38. He was a graduate of Redlands High School where he was a lineman for the class of 1957 CBL Championship Football Team. He earned a scholarship, went on to Riverside Community College where he received his AA, and attended the University of Redlands where he received his BA and MA. Tony was an educator for 39 years. He began his career at Rubidoux High School in 1962 teaching Spanish, Driver\'s Ed & coaching Basketball, Football, Track & Field. In 1967 he began teaching at RCC and became an Associate Professor and Counselor. He was instrumental in implementing the ESL and Head Start Programs at RCC and was active in intramural sports. He retired from the college in June 2001. In his spare time, he was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and camping trips with family and friends. He attended both Brookside Free Methodist Church and the Lake Gregory Community Church. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, YoYo (Carolyn) Hernández, daughter, Toni Marie (Hernández) Selzler, of San José, son, Greg Hernández of Redlands; his four grandchildren Tristan Selzler, of Reno, Brittany (Selzler) Schmitt, of Santa Rosa, Noah and Hannah Hernández of Redlands; his sister, Isabel Serrano and brother Frank Hernández both of San Bernardino. His quiet & generous spirit touched many and a celebration of his life is being planned. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
