John Bennett Obituary

Loving and greatly loved husband, father, grandfather and brother John A. Bennett, 67, passed away on December 21, 2015, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

He was born in Bethesda, Maryland, on July 29, 1948. He was the oldest of three children born to Audrey (Mills) and Allan Bennett.

John graduated from Kodiak High School in 1966 and served in the Navy from 1967-1970, where he was assigned as a field medic to the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the Marine Corps in Vietnam.

He married Kirstine (Kim) Buckardt on August 25, 1973.

After attending Green River Community College, he transferred to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, where in 1976 he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in both chemistry and biology.

He received his doctorate degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1979. He practiced medicine with the National Health Service Corps from 1980-1982 in Audubon, Iowa.

John moved with his family to Sequim and served as a family physician at the Sequim Medical Plaza from 1982-2001. He closed his private practice in 2001 to work in the emergency room at Bassett Army Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska, and in 2008 transferred to Weed Army Community Hospital in Fort Irwin, California.

He retired in 2010.

Family, friends and his patients were very important to John. He enjoyed the practice of medicine, to listen to his patients and be able to help them. He loved getting together for dinner or just a good glass of wine.

He would discuss politics with a passion and loved to expound on the importance of the ideals of liberty. John was chairman of the Libertarian Party in the '90s and last ran for the 6th Congressional District seat in 2002.

He enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, making wine, fishing, reading, computer games, playing "Settlers of Catan," traveling and hiking/backpacking.

He was elected as a commissioner of Clallam County Parks and Recreation District 1 in 1988 and helped make the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center a reality.

He was chairman of Boy Scout Troop No. 11490 from 1992-1997, during which time they hiked up Goat Trail and took a canoe trip to British Columbia.

He was appointed to the Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery by both Governors Booth Gardner and Mike Lowry. He served on the board from 1990-2000.

He is survived by Kirstine (Kim), his wife of 42 years; their three children, Jacob (Jennifer, deceased) Bennett, Sarah Bennett (James Ragsdale) and Daniel Bennett; his sister, Debbie (Scott) Baker; five grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Bennett.

A celebration-of-life Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 East Maple Street, Sequim, on Monday, February 8, 2016, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in St. Joseph's Parish Hall around noon.

I served with John as a fellow Marine Combat Hospital Corpsman. He was instrumental in my also attending college to earn degrees to which I am forever indebted. He manifested being an American citizen as few others are willing. He will be missed. Peace be with my friend.
