Robert Allman Obituary

Longtime Port Angeles resident Dr. Robert M. Allman II passed away recently at age 88.

He was born to Robert Moss Allman and Margaret Deavours Allman in Staten Island, New York, on April 9, 1928.

The family settled in Dallas, Texas, where they spent the majority of their family life. Asthmatic as a child, Bob had early success with a bicycle paper route.

The family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Bob stayed to finish high school and start college before moving back to Dallas, where his family had relocated.

Bob attended medical school at Southern Methodist University while continuing to live with his parents. At church, he met Paula Joan Patterson, who hailed from Hillsboro. They married four years later.

The young couple moved to Talihina, Oklahoma, for his internship at a military hospital, where their daughter Becky was born.

Bob seized an opportunity to do his residency at a hospital in Seattle, Washington, where daughter Julie and son Bob were born.

The family traveled to the Olympic Peninsula and decided to move to Port Angeles, where Bob was a founding member of the physicians clinic on Eighth Street with three other doctors. Son John was born in Port Angeles.

Bob had a long and satisfying career practicing general surgery in Port Angeles and retired in 1995.

Bob and Joan were a vital couple who enjoyed hiking, skiing, camping, music and art. They were devoted members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and attended regularly as a family.

They supported local cultural groups such as the Port Angeles Symphony and Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. They were avid opera lovers and traveled to Seattle and other American cities to see performances and to exhibits at art museums.

In his retirement, Bob took great pleasure in learning to cook. He was a devoted caregiver to his wife, who preceded him in death by 11 years. Their ashes are buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Bob is survived by four adult children; his brother, Pierce Allman; and sister Jane Wetzel of Dallas Texas.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 East Lopez Avenue, Port Angeles, on Saturday, February 18, at 1 p.m.

My fondest memories of my grandfather involve hiking in the Olympic Mountains, sharing an appreciation of the culinary arts, and watching cinema. He was an academic like I am, and he was never afraid to consider a radical idea or philosophy one might espouse. He was an open minded individual with a zest for life. Every time I grill salmon on my charcoal grill I think of Doc. I wish he could have met his great grandson. John Mark would have liked that and I think Doc would as well. He loved his wife and his family. I wish I would have met him sooner in life......

Bob is fondly remembered by our family as a both a gentle man and a gentleman.

We knew him as a gifted professional, a warm and kind friend, a fine thinker with a positive world view...as well as that quiet, quick and clever sense of humor!

He was a fantastic Uncle, and a very gentle man. He was able to discuss anything with thoughtfulness and humor, whether it was the meaning of life or the trail to the top of Mt. Angeles.
