Maureen Mooney Obituary

Maureen McMahon Mooney

Maureen M. Mooney, 66, formerly of Pensacola, passed away January 11, 2013 at her home in Stowe, VT with her family by her side. She was born December 15, 1946 in Mineola, NY, the daughter of William and Gladys McMahon.

She was the former director of Life Flight of Pensacola, Florida and co-authored three books on pre-hospital emergency care. Maureen's name will not appear on any plaque or memorial in Manhattan or be read out loud with the souls of 9/11 but she is another victim. While serving as part of the national DMAT disaster response team, Maureen was exposed to crushed glass, heavy metals and numerous other toxic substances. This exposure ultimately led to her terminal condition and early passing due to pulmonary hypertension. Maureen kept her First Responder ID near her, never forgetting the firefighters, police officers and others that she helped. ER nurse, Life Flight nurse, first responder to natural disasters and terrorist attacks, Maureen touched so many people. Married to her husband Joe, who she met at 13, she had over fifty years of love, laughter, support and a happy life dedicated to serving others. What a gift that her husband, Prince Charming held her hand as she drifted towards the light.

Maureen is survived by her husband, Joseph; her son Chris and his wife Tracey; grandsons Matthew and Patrick all of Stowe. Maureen also leaves behind a loved niece, Suzanne Zapalla of Long Island, NY. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Shawn Georges and Shawn's husband, John Georges; a nephew, Derek Georges; and a brother, James McMahon.

A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Baptist Hospital, 5th floor from 5-7 pm in Pensacola, Florida. Interment will be held in the spring in Stowe, VT. White-Fiess Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

I just learned of Maureen's passing this morning. In 1982 I was run over by a boat spearfishing and was picked up by Life Flight and taken to Baptist. The helo landed on the roof, the rotors spun down and they slide my onto the gurney. First person I saw looking up was Maureen. I said, "hi Maureen". She was surprised and after some time figured out who I was - a few years earlier, I had volunteered in the ER for several months while waiting to take my EMT State Boards. Once down in the ER Maureen asked me if there was anyone she could call and I said yes, call my girlfriend Judy in Gulf Breeze who was there in minutes. Maureen made a chaotic life changing event kind of day a whole lot easier - she was a kind soul - I really liked her.

I hope Maureen finds peace. What we need to remember abut Maureen & Paramedics,Police & Fire Depts. when a disaster happens, These Hero's think about the "VICTIMS" NOT Themselves. They give NO thought to their personal safety, she wanted to save LIVES.

Truly saddened to hear of Maureen's pre-mature passing. She was our Life Flight "Mom" to many of us who served on the flight crew over the years. I will always value the years I worked with and for Maureen -- she was a great teacher, flight nurse, boss, and co-worker. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.

I knew Maureen when she first started working at Baptist ER in the 1970's. I oriented her to the ER and worked with her for many years. She was a very kind, wonderful person and fantastic nurse! I am so sorry to hear of her premature death and my prayers to Joe and her family. She is soaring with the Angels now. I am honored to have known her.

Maureen was my cousin by marriage to my first cousin, Joe. About 15 years ago she and Joe and I and my husband, Ted, renewed our family ties. Getting to know Maureen at that point in our lives was a great gift, rather like finding a lost sister and a best girlfriend. Aside from our lazy days enjoying the Vermont countryside, I could always count on thoughful and insightful thinking via her emails so she never felt far away...and she wrote lovingly of Joe, Chris, Tracy, Matthew & Patrick so we always felt in touch with this branch of our family.

We made some farmer's market trips, museum trips, and she always had an eye for something that I might have overlooked, she never missed a thing! So now we will honor her memory as we indeed miss her, but I believe in my heart that she walks with us, and will never leave her entire family's side.

Maureen gave me a chance to become a Flight Paramedic when the helicopter had wheels and the flight suits were Red Cross jump suits. She is a great teacher, boss and lady with grace and dignity. Our prayers go to the family, her friends and EMS family. Paco
