I ran into Matt just last fall (October I believe) at the University of Pennsylvania. I hadn’t seen Matt in about 10 years. He is someone I liked in my childhood, teenage years, and also someone who I had brief encounters with during my early adulthood (post-college) life. Although my meetings with Matt were infrequent, his death has saddened me. I have come to learn that we had a number of parallels in our lives. Matt and his family moved from Upper Darby to Ridley early in his childhood as my family relocated from Drexel Hill to Ridley at around the same time. Matt had enjoyed summer weekends in Sea Isle as I have spent mine in just down the road in Avalon. He had a career path in technical sales as did I (which led to our encounter at the University of Pennsylvania). We have children roughly the same age, and I believe (although I could be wrong) that both of our wives are, or were, teachers. I felt compelled to post this, as I am quite shocked at his passing. Matt was someone who was evidently hard working, driven and successful. His altruistic nature shined, along with his competitive character, in his “Tri for Veterans”. I would have enjoyed future encounters or the chance to race with him. I can’t begin to understand the deep loss felt by his family, but do realize that the sadness of his passing is far reaching. My thoughts and sympathy are with Matt’s family. He will be missed.

I was a demo'er for Matt at Blackboard: The Early Years. He was always great fun travelling, but what I remember the most was his excitement and thrill to be headed home to his family. Always took priority over anything else. Bless you all.

I helped mentor Matt with the triathlon and was there on race weekend to volunteer. I worked closely with Matt at Blackboard and remember how focused, strategic and accomplished he was. He was also a ton of fun to be with and seemed to be wiser than his years. I watched him take to the sport of triathlon and he came down to DC to race in my events. It was great to hear him talk about wanting to compete faster and train better. He inspired me because he took on so much in life. Big family, advanced education, career success, shore house, investment properties, a healthy intellectual curiosity. I'll miss him.

Dear Heather, Caroline, Emma and Lila
Matt was such a special person and great coach. When I think of his smile and energy working with the girls with Newark Lacrosse I smile knowing he did what he loved. I wanted to share a little saying I was given when my brother passsed. "I am standing on the seashore. A ship spreads her sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. I stand watching her until she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says, "she is gone" Gone where? The loss of sight is in me, not her. but the moment when someone says, "she is gone" there are others who are watching her coming, other voices take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!" and that is dying.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

LOVE LIVES ON

Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved one's gone.

Those we love can never be
more than a thought apart,
for as long as there is memory,
they'll live forever in our heart.

We'll Miss You Coach Matt!

Dear Heather, Caroline, Emma and Lila,

On behalf of the entire coaching staff, athletes and parents of the Newark Youth Lacrosse Club, I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of your beloved husband and father. Matt was a great coach, friend and mentor to the young ladies he coached at NYLC. He will be deeply missed by all who came in contact with him. I truly hope you find some comfort in his unselfish dedication to those girls he inspired with his love of the game of lacrosse.

Maybe God bless you and your family in this deep time of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
