WESLEY HOTCHKISS Obituary

HOTCHKISS

WESLEY GREEN, formerly of Strafford, PA., died on Thursday, November 17th of pneumonia. He had most recently lived at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, PA. Born in Sacramento, CA, on February 11, 1925, to Waldo and Mary (Green) Hotchkiss, Wes grew up in the Seattle area and attended the University of Washington and The Art Center College of Design.
After joining the Marine Corps in WWII, Wes was to be part of the mainland Japan invasion force. When the atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, his role changed to become part of the occupation. He spent a year there. Upon his return, he married Kathryn Hinshaw, whom he had met at The Art Center. They made their home on Long Island, NY, where their three children were born.
Wes used his great artistic talent in the service of advertising. He lived the "Mad Men" life. He worked at McCann Erickson, and Young and Rubicam in New York. Moving to Philadelphia in 1965, he worked at Weightman, and was Vice President and Creative Director at Lewis & Gilman in the 1980s.
Wes was a great story teller. Among his repertoire of tales was the one about the making of his favorite TV commercial, which aired only once. It featured men, women, people of all ages and races on the phone, laughing, enjoying each other's stories. The client (the phone company) nixed the idea. But Wes loved to tell how the agency ran it just one time, late at night, at their own expense. The ad won a Cleo. His children went on to become artists in their own right. Robin (deceased) was a Philadelphia illustrator and ran a gallery in Malvern, PA. Casey Hotchkiss is a cameraman in Los Angeles, and Todd Hotchkiss is an architect in Des Moines IA. Wes is also survived by his brother, John, of Chatsworth, CA; and four grandchildren. Wes was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Hotchkiss; his sister, Helen, his daughter; and his parents.

Wes was one of the most talented, most helpful, most special humans to ever inhabit this planet.

Creative partner at L & G with my brother, Steve Barcus, Wes was instrumental in giving me the courage to move to NYC at 23 yrs.old, to what was to end up as a 40 plus year career in the creative departments some of largest ad agencies in the world.

Uncle Wes, you were a gift form the lord above. Have a drink and give my bro Steve a very bug hug.
