Ruth Blackman Obituary
Portsmouth - Ruth Phelps Blackman, 111, died June 15, 2017. A native of Chattanooga, TN, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph P. Blackman; and son-in-law, Bruce Eberwine, Jr. Ruth was a charter member of West Side Christian Church, taught Sunday School, and was active in the Richard Dale Women's Club, Girl Scouts, PTA and the Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Eberwine Johnson and husband Vann of Suffolk, and Barbara B. Wynne of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Leslie Askew (Dan), Carter Murphy (Rex), Robert Bruce Eberwine and Page Nagy (Don); six great-grandchildren, Daniel, Jordan, Carter, Amanda, Jessica and Justin; two great-great-grandchildren, Samantha and Arabella; and extended family, her caregivers and loving companions, Lynette Boyd and Sharon Williams. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff at Province Place of Maryview for their care and compassion.
A memorial service in July will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Side Christian Church, 535 Cherokee Road, Portsmouth, VA 23701, or a charity of your choice. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com

I first met Mrs. Blackman when she was 87. She was a member of my water aerobics class which I taught at the Portsmouth YMCA. She was very sweet and fun, too. She knitted me some dish washing cloths, which she recommended over the store-bought variety. But....they were so pretty and handmade...I could not bear to wash dirty dishes with them, so I used them as hot pads on my holiday tables and got many compliments on them.
The last time I saw her was when I visited her at Province Place when she was 103 years old. I was amazed that she remembered me and we had a good chat.
I am even MORE amazed that she went on to live to be 111 years old. GOD BLESSED HER and her family.
Thank you, Liz, for bringing your mother with you to our water aerobics class. I loved her and felt that love back to me.
