Rae Gordner Obituary

Rae Mann Gordner

Virginia Beach - Rae M. Gordner, 77, passed away peacefully in her home with her family at her side on November 26, 2013. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Retired U.S. Army Col. Henry L. Gordner.

A long-time resident of Virginia Beach, Rae dedicated much of her life to serving others, volunteering for various local community outreach programs including CHKD, Elder Hostel, Habitat for Humanity, FaithWorks, and Meals on Wheels. She was a life-long Episcopalian and a active member of Old Donation Episcopal Church.

In her early career, Rae served as General Manager at ARA Transportation in Norfolk, VA, and later became Human Resources Manager at CONCOA/ Controls Corporation of America in Virginia Beach, Retiring in 2007.

Never one to let the ground still beneath her feet, Rae filled her days with many and varied activities and hobbies. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, golfing, playing cards with "the girls" and singing with Virginia Voices. Several years ago, Rae started a small beading business "Findings" with her granddaughter Kirsten. Together, they would market their wares in local shows and shops. Of all of her endeavors, her greatest joy was rooted in her children and grandchildren. Her supportive and caring ways helped foster this close-knit and loving family. She will be remembered by all those who knew her as possessing an amazingly sharp wit, a warm heart and generous ways. She was often referred to as "one classy lady".

Rae is survived by her children, Edward Dennis Klavenski of Portsmouth, Cheryl Modine of Virginia Beach, Kim K. Ashley of Chesapeake, and John L. Klavenski and his wife Pam of Virginia Beach, her four grandchildren, Kirsten L. Modine of Virginia Beach, Alec N. Modine of Virginia Beach, Ashley E. Brooks of London, England, and A. Austin Brooks V of Seattle, WA, and former son-in-law Dr. Alfred A. Brooks, IV, of Chesapeake, VA.

Her family finds solace in knowing she has been reunited with her loving husband Hank, whom she dearly missed and that they too will one day see her again.

Rae's children and grandchildren would like to express special thanks to her dear friend and "soul sister", Jane Fuqua, who loved and supported her and them for many years and during her extended illness.

A memorial service will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach on Saturday, November 30 at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends in the church reception hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Outreach Program of Old Donation Episcopal Church.

Carol and I are so sad to hear of Rae's
passing. I, Warren, worked with Rae for her entire time at Concoa. She was a wonderful person, caring and knowledgeable in her work and having a great singing voice as well as being a very talented artist and businesswoman.
We will miss her very much as we did Hank, and we send our thoughts and prayers to the entire family.

I played golf and cards with Rae at Cypress Point CC. I enjoyed the time we had together over the years. The jewelry she made was beautiful and is worn by many of the ladies at CYPT. I am sure it will be a fond reminder of our friend. She will be greatly missed by the Friday "hand and foot" card group.
