Harry Carter Valentine Jr.

Virginia Beach - Carter Valentine died Thursday, April 17 in his home at the North End of Virginia Beach.

Carter, born in Norfolk, Va., was a 1951 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Va. He was graduated, majoring in History, from his beloved Virginia Military Institute in 1955. From 1955 to 1975 Carter served his country as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Vietnam veteran serving as an artillery officer during his career with the military. Major Valentine was especially happy to be chosen a Ceremonial Parade Commander for the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. In 1976, after retiring from the Marine Corps, he became Senior Marine Instructor, Marine Corps Junior ROTC, Phoebus High School, Hampton, Va. He retired from teaching in 1995. Carter loved teaching and touched many young lives in his teaching career.

Carter's first wife, Lucille, died in 2000. He is survived by their cherished children; Jim Valentine (his

wife, Lori) from St. Louis, Mo. and Paige Valentine and her much loved children, Miles and Marley of Burke, Va. Also his sister Paige Barrow (husband, Tim) of Virginia Beach (children Sloan, Lisa, Lilly ,Shannon, Michael and Emma) and brother Graham (wife, Beth, children Katherine, Johnny, Scott and Michael) of Johns Island, S.C.

Carter married Carvel Taylor, reunited after 50 years at their Wilson reunion, in 2004. He loved her children: Sukie Amory (husband. David and children, Linzee, Eric and John) of Duxbury, Mass., Steve Taylor (partner Diane and children Lacey and Tanner) of Virginia Beach, Joe Taylor (wife, Wendy and children, Trip, Terry and Trevor) of Chicago, Ill. and Mary Taylor (children, Chris and Liz).

Carter was a joyful and active member of Old Donation Episcopal Church. He enjoyed traveling with Carvel, sailing and surf fishing. He loved his Jack Russell Terriers, Molly Brown and Taz, his faithful companions in his final days. But closest to his heart were his Band of Brothers, his Brother Rats of VMI.

The funeral Eucharist will be held April 26 at 3 p.m. at Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N Witchduck Rd. Virginia Beach, VA with a reception in the parish hall after the service. He will be buried with his family at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Va. on Sunday, April 27 at 1:30 p.m.

Carter was a wonderful father and and outstanding grandfather. He was a man of integrity and grace and an outstanding role model for his grand children Miles and Marley . They loved him so very much. When Carter and I graduated from VMI, we reported to Marine Corps Base, Quantico to begin our officer training; then on to over 20 years service.Our paths crossed number of times and I looked forward to seeing him at VMI reunions. He was an exceptional Marine and a wonderful friend and brother rat. He will be missed by many. Reg Ridgely
