Chesapeake - Betty Kathryn Oakley Holt, 86, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Born in Connersville, IN, she was the daughter of the late Howard B. and Eleanor Oakley. Betty retired as the Business Manager of Leesburg Regional Medical Center (FL) in 1989. Upon retirement, she volunteered with the reading development program at a local elementary school in Leesburg (FL). In 2002, Betty joined her son's family and became a resident of North Carolina and then Virginia.
Betty was a former member of the Virginia Beach Public Library Advisory Board for the Blind; a member of Old Donation Episcopal Church; and a founding member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. She was an avid reader and traveler; enjoyed cross-word puzzles and was a great mentor to family and friends.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, William B. Holt (retired CPO, USN). Left to cherish her memory are her son, William H. Holt (Jean) of Chesapeake; daughter, Barbara H. Stevens of Altamonte Springs, FL; grandchildren, Kelvin D. Owen Jr. (Christy); Holly E. Holt-Tuten (Glenn); Scott Owen; Melissa Stevens; Kirsten Holt; great-grandchildren - Amanda Raiford; Katy Beck; David Beck Jr.; April Smith, Nathan Owen; and great-great-granddaughter Vera Lea Smith; as well as extended family and many close friends in Virginia and Florida.
Betty's life will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013 in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Rev. Lottie Cochran will officiate. Interment will follow in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 in the funeral home.
