Constance Ferebee Obituary

Constance L. Ferebee
Virginia Beach - Constance Leigh Ferebee, 91, passed away on May 28, 2012, in Virginia Beach. She was born in Norfolk, the elder daughter of Samuel Harrell Ferebee and Grace Willard Shepherd Ferebee. She was predeceased by her parents and by her sister Jean Ferebee Reynolds, of Dallas, TX. Constance graduated from Maury High School and attended Mary Washington College. She had degrees in nursing from the University Of Virginia and Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, and did additional graduate work from Catholic University.
She taught nursing prior to entering military service. During her 24 years in the Army Nurse Corps she rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She served in Hawaii during the Korean Conflict and subsequently taught at Fort Sam Houston Medical Training Center. She was then assigned as a recruiting officer in Indianapolis and from there she spent four years as Chief of Army Nurse Corps Recruiting, a job which took her all over the United States. She served one tour in Vietnam. In another tour of duty she was assigned to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. She was also stationed in Germany twice, in Landstuhl and Heidelburg, as well as serving at Fort Bragg, NC and at Fort Monroe.
After retirement in 1975, LTC Ferebee returned to Norfolk and became very active in community affairs. She was the executive director of Mobile Meals of Norfolk for 15 years and served on several boards including Ghent Venture, the Norfolk Little Theater, the Norfolk Chamber Consort, Town-N-Gown, the Virginia Symphony League, the Norfolk Society of Arts and the AAUW. She was an active member of WHRO and PEO; she also volunteered at the Chrysler Museum and served as chief of an election precinct. She moved to Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach in 2002. She was a member of Old Donation Episcopal Church and she supported numerous charitable organizations, both locally and nationally.
LTC Ferebee is survived by nephews David H. Reynolds of Austin, TX, and Peter G. Reynolds of Kansas City, MO; nieces Constance Reynolds Somers of San Antonio, TX, and Robin Reynolds Willim of Bentonville, AR; eight grandnieces and nephews; two great-grand nieces; her loyal housekeeper and friend Virginia Diggs; and numerous cousins.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. Following the service friends and family are invited to gather at Westminster-Canterbury from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. to celebrate Connie's life.
