Carl Akers

Carl W. Akers VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Carl W. Akers, 60, died on April 16, 2010 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. A native of Savannah, Tenn., Cmdr. Akers was the son of Carlton Lindsey and Fay Mabry Akers. Cmdr. Akers was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1972. His 20- year Navy career included extensive sea/shore duty on the Atlantic coast. Following his retirement from the Navy, Cmdr. Akers earned an MBA and worked extensively in the financial field. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lillian Riley Akers of Virginia Beach; his beloved daughter and son-in- law, Amy Akers Johnson and Page S. Johnson II; numerous members of his extended family. Carl was an avid sports fan, but was truly dedicated to the New York Yankees. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. Services will be private at a later date.
