Chester Atkinson Obituary

Chester B. Atkinson VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired Master Chief Chester B. Atkinson passed away peacefully at home Nov. 15, 2010. Born Nov. 29, 1926, he was the son of Mr. Chester Atkinson and Elizabeth Macafee Atkinson of Tuckerton, N.J. Master Chief Atkinson's 32-year naval career took him to many foreign ports of call, he earned numerous medals and awards and served in many ships. He participated in the Korean War, the Cuban blockade and the Vietnam conflict. Master Chief Atkinson's duties also took him to Washington, D.C., as a detailer, and he further enjoyed duties with A.S.W. Tactal schools command, as well as a Commander Second Fleet Staff where he served as command master chief. After retirement, Chet stayed busy opening a home improvement business and spending many hours on causes important to him. Not completing a task was not an option. He belonged to the Masons, Lions Club, Fleet Reserve and American Legion. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorothy. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his close friends, Ed DeAngelis and wife Bonita of Cape Charles, Va., Al Wall of Norfolk and Kiffie Bjorkune of Norfolk. A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Friends will visit one hour prior to the service. The burial will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cooperstown, N.Y. Condolences may be offered at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Chet was one of the finest Master Chiefs the US Navy has ever known. He was also a strong pillar of the community and created many jobs over the years through his growing business. I'm sure that Dorothy is happy to see him again. CDR Steve Schwing, US Navy
