Christopher Knollenberg Obituary

Christopher Knollenberg VIRGINIA BEACH - Christopher Todd "Topher" Knollenberg, 53, went to be with the Lord Dec. 3, 2010, after being a "walking miracle" battling brain cancer for 18 years. Christopher died peacefully at home with his loving wife, Vicki, sons, Andrew and Daniel and family surrounding him. Mr. "K," as his students called him, was a teacher, assistant principal, and elementary school counselor in the Norfolk school system for 26 years. He loved, and was loved, by his students, fellow teachers and administrators. For the past four years he had been the Minister of Music at River Oak Church, inspiring hundreds to a deeper walk of faith and love for God. Christopher loved the Lord and used his talents of music as a Worship Minister previously at Eastside Christian Church, Avalon Church of Christ, and was instrumental in establishing Living Stones Christian Church (now Real-Life Christian Church in Chesapeake). Christopher was born in Oblong, Ill., on Nov. 13, 1957 to Wilbur and Joan Knollenberg. He leaves behind a large immediate and extended family: his wife of 21 years, Vicki, and sons, Andrew and Daniel. He is also survived by his mother, Joan Knollenberg-Reeder; brother, Kim and wife Cathi Knollenberg of Bakersfield, Calif.; brother, Jimmie Knollenberg of Oblong; sister, Julie and husband Rick Campbell of Chesapeake; father- and mother-in-law, Jimmy and Dail Johnson of Norfolk; brother-in-law, Steve Johnson of Norfolk; sister-in-law, Sherry and husband John Maurice of Chesapeake; sister-in-law, Diane and husband Robert Baker of Norfolk; and dearly loved nieces and nephews, Nathan and Kristy Knollenberg, Mary Lee and Matt Glaize, Douglas Campbell, Kaitlyn, Karch, and Kurt Knollenberg, Michael Maurice, Christy and Daniel Miller, Katelyn Maurice and Sara Baker. There will be a "Celebration of Life" Monday night at 7 p.m. at River Oak Church in Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk, is in charge of arrangements.

I met Chris when we both were young teachers starting our careers. I have many fond memories of his legendary antics, particularly the jokes he played in the teachers lounge. It was impossible to be in a bad mood when you were around Chris! I know I am a better person for having know him.

Chris was a friend of mine from childhood. His mother was close friends with my mother. Chris was gifted with the ability to make people comfortable and always make you laugh. I feel a great loss even though I haven't seen him in years. I pray that his strength and love for life will comfort you in the years to come. Doris (Walters) Dremstedt (class of '75)

Vicki, many of us project sadness for things as trivial as a cloudy day or a loss by our favorite sports team. You and Christopher modeled how to grow in joy and faith, even while carrying a genuinely heavy burden. Sharon and I are so sorry for your loss, but glad that Christopher is truly, fully healed. I've spent the last 18+ years admiring you both from a greater distance, but with greater respect, also. Our prayers continue.

Dear Vicki,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your boys. I pray that God will ease the pain of your loss and bring you peace.

I must share that Chris was always smiling, laughing and pulling a practical joke or two. He never let anything get him down. I admired that so much in him. I worked with him at Sherwood Forest for several years and he also married my daughter, Amber to my son-in-law Andrew Ungvarsky in September 2005. We all just loved him. I remember having the "stray" dog under my desk at work and he took him and gave him a home.....it was during the time of his last surgery and Chris told me that the dog never left his side during his recuperation......he also said that he was chewing up all his shoes and everything else in the house.

I left Norfolk Public Schools in May 2008 and went to work for Virginia Beach Public Schools and spoke with Chris a few times after leaving Norfolk. He always listened and gave me good advice. What a great mentor, counselor, and friend.

Keep all of the wonderful memories in your heart. Your memories can never be taken from you. What a relief to know without a doubt where Chris is right now.......he truly was a man of God and showed that every single day of his life. I always saw the joy in his heart.

God bless you and your family.

Vicki, Andrew and Daniel, Your dad will never be forgotten by me as he was a huge testimony of the love of Jesus in very difficult years of my life. I use to cut your dad's hair years ago and sometimes he would bring you boys with him. Time has passed so quickly but it seems like yesterday that I cut his hair;. God brings special people into our lives for a time and like most people he knew, I was very blessed. Prayers go out to you as you guys continue on. Much Love, Debbie Clark

I went to school with Chris, class of "75" and also belong to the same church, Central United Methodist, in the only Oblong. It was a joy to grow up with Chris thru the childhood years. He was so witty, so smart ,and so sweet. One hopes to touch a few lives while on earth ,I am sure he touched thousands with his down to earth charm, compassion and faith. He is probably telling the angels right now "did ya hear the one about...." God bless to his wife , his sons and to his brothers, sister and mother.

What can anyone say about such a great man of God. He would rather the words be reflected to his savior, Jesus Christ. John 7:18 He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory: but he that seeks the glory of he who sent him shall no unrighteousness be found in him. Mr. K loved Christ and only wanted to bring glory to Christ. We love you, man of God. Rest with our Father...
