Gail Guthrie

Gail H. Guthrie VIRGINIA BEACH - Gail H. Guthrie passed away Dec. 28, 2010 with her family by her side. Gail was born and raised in Wilmington, Del. She was the third child of the late Dorsey and Helen Hudson. She is survived by John, her husband of 38 years who was her college sweetheart and best friend, her son Adam of Washington, D.C., her son Patrick and her daughter-in-law Annie of Washington, D.C., and her daughter Bridget of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Martin of Wilmington and her brother, Steve Hudson of Plymouth, Mass., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gail received her early childhood education degree from James Madison University and her master's in education from Old DominionUniversity. She was a passionate elementary school teacher for 24 years, and taught 16 years at Hermitage Elementary School where she was recognized as Teacher of the Year and Reading Teacher of the Year. Gail was an active member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and Old Donation Episcopal Church where she was a Stephen Minister. Among the passions in Gail's life were her family and teaching. She adored and was devoted to her husband and children. Gail endowed a scholarship at JMU to be awarded annually to a student teacher who exhibited a primary criterion - a passion for teaching. Gail was indebted to Diane Miller, her Stephen Minister for the last three years. A service to celebrate Gail's life will be held Sunday, Jan. 2, at 3 p.m. at Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Old Donation Episcopal Preschool, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23455.
