Jens Hermann Obituary

Jens Hartvig Hermann NORFOLK - Jens Hartvig Hermann, M.D., 78, devoted husband of Cheryl D. Dayton Hermann, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at their home. He is survived by daughter, Ellen M. Hermann; son, Peter C. Hermann, his wife Heather, their son Hunter; daughter, Christine H. Williams and her husband Ken. Additionally, Dr. Hermann is survived by his blended family members including, Lee and Marty Dayton, their children Nicholas, Scott, Natalie and Carina; Peter and Kelly Dayton and their son, Miller. He is also survived by his sister, Grete H. Henius; nephew, Jacob and his wife Mette. Having been born in 1932 in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, Denmark, and graduated from Birkerod Statsskole High School in 1950, Dr. Hermann began his professional career as an orthopedic surgeon in 1959 after graduating from the University of Copenhagen. His personal letters include a testimony regarding the new Dr. Hermann's future. This came from Prof. K. Brochner-Mortensen, M.D., in 1958, stating that he was "a promising, conscientious and experienced young man whose sound judgment and pleasant manners have made him well liked by his colleagues and teachers." Between 1959 and 1966, he worked in Grostrup Sygehus, Denmark; Norwalk Hospital, Conn.; Army Medical Corps, Denmark; Kommune Hospitalet, Denmark; Metropolitan Hospital, New York City; and Crippled Children's Hospital, Newark, N.J. During that period of time he became a permanent U.S. resident on July 12, 1962. He opened his private practice in Norwalk, Conn., in 1966. Many congratulatory notes arrived. Later he invited Peter Stovell, M.D. and Nicholas Polifroni, M. D. to join him and the group was highly regarded by their patients. Dr. Hermann retired in 1992. He moved to Norfolk in 2008. Dr. Hermann enjoyed playing bridge, reading, gourmet cooking, crossword puzzles, travel, discussing national and international politics and keeping a keen eye on the traffic on the Chesapeake Bay. He was a member of Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and various organizations and clubs in Connecticut. It is believed Dr. Hermann thought like a Dane, worked like an American and ate like an Italian. He will be sorely missed. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cremate.org.

I first met Jens in 1996 at the Fairfield County Hunt Club. Jens and Cheryl were extremely kind and considerate to me at that time, especially when my job necessitated my spending time away from my wife and family. Jens had a great sense of humor and a love for good food and wine – I enjoyed the quote in his obituary that states he “thought like a Dane, worked like an American and ate like an Italian”.
We will all miss him in our own personal ways. I would like to express my sincere condolences to Cheryl and to Jens extended family and friends.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Jens Hermann. I had the pleasure of working with him in the Emergency Department at Norwalk Hospital for 15 years. He had a commanding presence, yet he was kind and caring towards his patients; he also had a great sense of humor. May God give you comfort during this sad time. Jens will be sorely missed. With kindest regards, B.J. Mapes, RN
