Kathie Meek Obituary

Kathie Meek VIRGINIA BEACH - Kathie Van Den Brink Meek, 54, passed away suddenly at her home in Virginia Beach, Oct. 19, 2010. Kathie was born Jan. 15, 1956 in Allegan, Mich., to Alvin and Betty Van Den Brink of Fennville, Mich. Her parents survive her. Kathie graduated from Fennville High School in 1974 and from Central Michigan University in 1979 with a B.S. in elementary education. She also earned a master's degree in public administration (MPA) from the University of Oklahoma in 1993. Kathie married Thomas Paul Meek of Clare, Mich., Aug. 29, 1981. They have two children, Tong Paul Meek, 19, and Moira Hui Meek, 15, both of whom were adopted in China during the mid-1990s. Other surviving family members include brothers, Warren Van Den Brink and Jerry Van Den Brink; and sisters, Millie Van Den Brink, Lois (Mark) Corsaut and Jan (Allen) Sal. She is also survived by her father and mother-in-law, Forrest and Jean Meek of Clare, Mich., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clare. Kathie and Tom were a Navy couple. Tom joined the Navy shortly after their marriage in 1981 and he remains on active duty. Kathie and Tom lived in countries around the world, including Japan, Italy, Germany and Bahrain, and numerous other duty stations throughout the United States along both coasts as well as Hawaii. The greater Washington, D.C., area was like a second home to Kathie, having spent many years there during Tom's various assignments. Kathie's own professional career included elementary and middle school teaching positions in Michigan, management of military child care facilities and activities, both overseas and stateside, facilities management at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C., community liaison officer duties at the American Embassy in Bonn, Germany, and volunteer duty at the VA Hospital in Miami. Kathie also volunteered significant time in parenting activities like Brownie Scouts, organizing and fundraising for Moira's soccer teams, and Team Mother during Tong's wrestling years. Tom felt the most important position Kathie ever held was stay-at-home Mom, which she enjoyed immensely for most of the past decade. Kathie was a generous giver to causes supporting mistreated and abandoned animals as well as environmental protection. The Norfolk Chapter of the SPCA and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation were two organizations of importance to her and they would be appropriate recipients for memorial donations in Kathie's honor. A beloved mother and wife, Kathie leaves behind a bereaved family and countless friends from a life of devotion and service to others. She is profoundly missed. The memorial service for Kathie will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek/Fort Story Base Chapel. Tom, Tong and Moira,
I am still having trouble coming to the reality that my friend Kathie is now an angel. I always knew she was, and now knowing that she is looking out for all of us is helping me to accept the sadness I feel everyday.
I will always remember Kathie and the good times we had as neighbors, and friends. I couldn't have asked or picked a better neighbor. She was so kind, generous, honest, and sincere. Not to mention funny, happy and so proud to be a Navy spouse and a mom. Kathie was "Real"
I missed you all when you moved to FL and when Kathie and Moira appeared at my back door in July of 2009, and she told me you all had moved back to Crofton, it was such a happy day for me. I told her I had recently had a dream, that she and Moira stopped at my house to say hi on their way back from taking Tong to college. The dream was so real, so when she and Moira came, I immediately said "Wait, did you just come back from taking Tong to college". I think she thought I was crazy. When she said "No, we have moved back" I was elated. I am so thankful for the times we shared at the OWC luncheons last year. It was as if she had never moved away. Everyone was so happy to see her, and she to see them. She also got front row parking which is always nice :-)
I will cherish my friendship with Kathie, and will keep her close in my heart and my prayers always.
Kathie my dear friend, you are missed and loved by so many.

Tom, Tong and Moira Please know that I am only a phone call, email or text message away(even though I know Kathie did not like texting). You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I know Kathie is smiling down on you.

Dear Tom, Tong and Moira,

So sorry to hear about Kathy's passing. I remember you all very well from my years in Bonn at the US Mission. Her joy, enthusiam and warm smile helped many a newcomer and first-timer to make that huge adjustment to overseas living. I will certainly keep all of you in my prayers. May Kathy rest in peace.

Dear Tom, Tong, and Moira - It doesn't seem so long ago that the girls and I were in the same "boat" of grief as your family is now. The first year is very hard so please don't hestitate to rely on God, family & friends - that's what they're there for, after all. I remember Kathie as warm and dynamic and full of life. With time, you will have flashbacks of "life moments" with her - good, not so good, funny, sad. Let them surface. It brings healing even through the pain. Also it helped me to remember that the Lord is always close to the brokenhearted. and crushed in spirit. It was my "anchor" through the grieving. In Christ's love and mine - Suzy

Tom, Tong, and Moira. It was wonderful to see all of you today along with the rest of the family and friends for Kathie's Memorial Service in Clare. She was a special lady as you well know and I always enjoyed chatting with her at family functions. Please take with you all of the love that was shared today and I look forward to the next time we can all be together again. With much love, your cousin Brian.
