Manasseh Chavis Obituary

Manasseh T. Chavis PORTSMOUTH - Manasseh T. Chavis, 78, of the 1400 block of Horne Ave., died Nov. 28, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. He was born in Windsor, N.C., and retired from the United States Army in February 1975 after 30 years of service. He also retired from the Virginia Port Authority as a policeman in May 1995 after 19 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist South Portsmouth. He was predeceased in death by his spouse, Annie Leathers Redd Chavis; son, Manasseh T. Chavis Jr.; his mother and father, Willie L. and Manasseh T. Chavis; and one sister, Wilheminia Foxworth. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret A. Sills-Allen and husband the Rev. Jimmie Allen of Virginia Beach and Ella L.A. Martin of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Letitia (Sills) Robinson, Michelle Sills, Lakisha Chavis, Thomas (TJ) Chavis, Tammika (Chavis) Patterson, LaTonya Jenkins and Glenn Martin Jr. Other survivors include Barbara Chavis (first wife of 42 years and the mother of Margaret, Ella and Manasseh Thomas Jr.); great-grandchildren, other cousins, relatives and friends, special in-laws, Wilma (Chavis) Vann, William Sills and Glenn Martin Sr. A funeral will be held Monday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. in First Baptist Church South Portsmouth, 1445 Centre Ave., with the Rev. Warren E. Amlet presiding. Burial will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. Viewing will be held Sunday, Dec. 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth.
