Margaret Dowdy Obituary

Margaret V. Dowdy NORFOLK - On the evening of July 9, 2010 our mother, Margaret Virginia Dowdy, 83, passed into the loving awaiting arms of God, cradled by her family, as she entered into serene peace. Born in Gum Neck, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Ephraim and Mary Taft. Our mother was always kind and benevolent to the sick and less fortunate. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She with her beloved husband Sam, raised a family of seven children, Robert L. Dowdy and wife Debra of Chesapeake, Sanford I. Dowdy III of Virginia Beach, Judith Maxey of Virginia Beach, Rosemary Firmi and husband Nick of Virginia Beach, Tim Dowdy of Suffolk, Bonnie DeBatt and husband Steve of Palm Bay, Fla., and Gary Dowdy of Norfolk. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren including Jennifer D. Browne who occupied a special place in her heart; 14 great-grandchildren; her sister, Minnie L. Spruill of East Lake, N.C.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The sorrow felt in our hearts at her passing can only be softened by the knowledge that she will finally be joining our father. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, today, July 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

My first-grade teacher was Margaret Dowdy, at Briggs Elementary School in 1955-56. Is this the same Ms. Dowdy? I loved her so much! She walked to our house on Washington Street to visit me when I had measles, and her compassion and kindness live on, as now I am a teacher and refer often to "my 1st grade teacher".
