Mary Smith Obituary

Mary West Smith PORTSMOUTH - Mary West Smith, 88, of One Bon Secours Way, passed away Monday, April 19, 2010, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Born April 22, 1921, she was a native of Portsmouth and a member of Monumental United Methodist Church. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John Walker West Sr. and Mary Owens West; her brother, John W. West Jr.; and a special friend, Winifred L. Wood. Mary graduated from Longwood College and worked for Tidewater Association of Credit Management when she retired. She is survived by a special family, Ron and Pat Vess and their children, Bryan, Kevin and Deanna of Roanoke, Va.; cousins, Richard Rawles, Jeannie Gilpin, Elizabeth West and Lee West; her godchild, Mrs. Lee Cloud of Anchorage, Alaska; and a nephew, JT West. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Robert E. Friend Jr. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is in charge. www. I worked for Mary in the early 70's. I'm glad she lived a long life - she was very vibrant.
