Shirley Surring Obituary

Shirley S. Surring CHESAPEAKE - Shirley S. Surring, 83, beloved wife, mother and granny, went to be with the Lord Sunday, April 11, 2010. Mrs. Surring was born in Norfolk to the late David Herbert Starboard and Hilda Grimes Starboard. She was a registered nurse working at DePaul Hospital and the Public Health Hospital as head nurse retiring after 20 years of service. Mrs. Surring was a longtime member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church where she was very active in many of its groups and activities. She also was a Girl Scout leader and had a special place in her heart for animals and caring for family and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Harper. She is survived by her husband, Bill Surring; her son, Roger Surring and wife Rhonda of Chesapeake; her daughter, Paulette Oteifa and husband Nader of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, Kristy Surring; grandsons, Kevin Surring and Nathan Oteifa; and a sister, Theresa Ellerson. The Surring family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Autumn Care of Great Bridge for their special care and concern. A funeral will be conduced by the Rev. Danny Kesner at Great Bridge United Methodist Church Saturday at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Twiford Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. To share condolences with the family please visit www. I love you Aunt Shirley; You were not just my Aunt but also my mentor when I was growing up. Larry, myself and our children will miss you deeply. I know you are with Nanny and Momma(your sister), and will always be in our hearts and prayers. Our prayers are with you Roger, Uncle Bill and Paulette. <3
