Virgil Derby Obituary

Virgil Lee Derby Jr. SUFFOLK - Virgil Lee Derby Jr., 80, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 22, 2010. He was born in Franklin, Va., the son of the late Nita Powell Derby and Virgil Lee Derby Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the 101st Airborne during the Korean War. He later went on to retire as a papermaker from Union Camp. Virgil was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was also a member of the North South Skirmish Association / Southampton Greys. Virgil is survived by his wife of 44 years, Shirley Carr Derby; daughter, Sandy D. Savage (Brian Savage) of Gates, N.C.; sons, Ricky Derby (Kim Collier) of Suffolk, Harry Derby of Suffolk, Scott Derby (Kaye Joyner) of Franklin; grandchildren, Richard Derby (Samantha Derby), Ryan Derby, Brandon and Michael Savage; great-grandchildren, Alayna and Ava Derby. A funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 10 a.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434 with Pastor Gene Asbill officiating. Burial will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery with military honors. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home for a time of visitation and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the church of your choice. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
