Winton Wilgus Obituary

Winton L. Wilgus
Norfolk - Winton Lamar Wilgus passed away November 15, 2011, with his family at his side.
Born January 22, 1933, to Clifton Hargrave and Evelyn Surles Wilgus, Mr. Wilgus graduated from Granby High School, attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, and received a bachelor of business administration degree with a major in sales and marketing from Old Dominion University. As a student athlete, Mr. Wilgus excelled in football, track, and pole vaulting. As an enlisted member of the Naval Reserve, he proudly served his country for fifteen years.
Mr. Wilgus began his career in Norfolk, Virginia, as a district sales representative for Texaco, Inc., where he was quickly promoted to sales supervisor in an area that ranged from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to Richmond, Virginia, and where he was later elevated to head of the sales division. In his next venture, Mr. Wilgus was general manager of the Harding Company, Chesapeake, Virginia. Ultimately, Mr. Wilgus realized a life-long ambition of entrepreneurship, founding Interglobal Marketing, Inc. where he spent the greater part of his career as President. Prior to retirement, Mr. Wilgus was a realtor with the real estate agency of ReMax of Norfolk.
For almost fifty years, Mr. Wilgus was a faithful member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as Administrative Board Member, Treasurer, President of United Methodist Men, Adult Sunday School teacher, and Worship Committee Chairman.
Mr. Wilgus was a member of the Norfolk Sales and Marketing Executives Club, the Hampton Roads Foreign Commerce Club, Optimist International, and Freemason Ruth Lodge No. 89 AF & AM, where he was a former Secretary. He was a past Master and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
As a husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Wilgus was exemplary. His life was defined by determination, hard work, eternal optimism, and an ever-present sense of humor. He will be especially remembered for his devotion and commitment to his family, for his delight in classical music, and for his enjoyment of football, a friendly poker game, and home-cooked meals.
Mr. Wilgus is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughter Suzanne and her husband, Neal J. Robinson of Williamsburg, Virginia; his daughter Sharon and her talented musician, Scott Travis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and his grandchildren Juliet, Richard, and Brittain of Williamsburg, Virginia. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff of the intensive care unit of Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia, for the exceptional care and support they provided during this difficult time.
A memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at 4 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2709 Greendale Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia. Memorial gifts may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Wilgus, though my Mom and I got to know you through church (and you were one of her favorite people), it wasn't until Winton became our realtor and helped us sell Mom's house that I got to know him well. He made a difficult time and task easier and he went above and beyond to help us and lift our spirits. I quickly became the self-proclaimed President of his fan club. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
