Ray Wimmer Obituary

Ray Burwell Wimmer CHESAPEAKE - Ray Burwell Wimmer, 76, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Chesapeake Healthcare surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hickory, Va., on April 29, 1933, the son of the late Burwell R. and Evelyn Garrett Wimmer. He had proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Ray was a former member of the IBEW Local 81 for more than 50 years. He also worked at the Norfolk Ford Plant before retiring from Union Camp in Franklin. Ray spent many years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center as his passion was to help others. Ray was a former member of Oaklette United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his daughter, Patricia Anne. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Atha Madison Wimmer; his two sons, David R. Wimmer and Steve J. Wimmer, both of Chesapeake; his sister, Elizabeth Harris; his many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. in Oaklette United Methodist Church, 520 Oaklette Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23325. The Rev. C. Eugene Meek will officiate. Memorial donations may be made in Ray's name to Oaklette United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the care of the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake.
