Thomas W. Glickman VIRGINIA BEACH - Devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas W. Glickman, 81, passed away Aug. 3, 2010. Born in Oakland, Calif., on March 20, 1929, Capt. Glickman enlisted in the Navy in 1947 at age 17 and served his country for more than 40 years. In 1957, he attended Officer Candidate School and received his commission. He served 24 assignments throughout his career including staff, Commander River Patrol Force in Vietnam and commanding officer of the USS Rigel AF- 58 and USS Kilauea AE-26. Among his 27 personal awards and decorations were the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals with Combat Distinguishing Devices, and two Purple Hearts. After retiring from active duty in 1987, Capt. Glickman began a second career as a volunteer instructor for AARP's 55 Alive program. From 1990 to 2008, he taught more than 1,000 adult students and held several leadership positions with the organization at the state, regional and national level. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Virginia Beach. Capt. Glickman is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Patricia O. Glickman of Virginia Beach; two children, Cyndi Szurgot and her husband Chris Szurgot of Sammamish, Wash., and Ted Glickman and his wife Pam Glickman of Overland Park, Kan.; two grandchildren, Scott Hockman and Sydney Glickman; his brother, Jerry Glickman and his wife Nancy Glickman of San Leandro, Calif.; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Agnes Glickman of Oakland, Calif. A memorial visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23464. A funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Apostles, 1593 Lynnhaven Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA 23453. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Capt. Glickman's honor to the Church of the Holy Apostles, the Disabled American Veterans or the American Lung Association. Tom and Pat were our next-door neighbors in Virginia Beach for 18 years until they moved to a retirement community. Tom was a great gentleman, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Pat and Suzanne McBride

Aunt Pat, Cyndi, Ted and families,

Although our moments together have been far too few, they will always be memorable. We were quite saddened to hear of Uncle Tom’s passing. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

As you may have heard we were on vacation when we got the news. On Saturday, while visiting with my wife’s sister and brother-in-law in Oregon, we went online and I shared with them Uncle Tom’s accomplishments, family memories and how he took the time to correspond with our daughter Courtney for a school writing project.

They both commented that he seemed to be quite a good man.

He was, he was quite a good man and we will miss him.

Tom relieved me as N-3 for the River Patrol Force (CTF-116) in April 1968. He was as fine a SHIPMATE as I've ever had. Tom was brave, intelligent, witty and thoughtful -- with brave being first among equals.

I am deeply saddened by Tom's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his famiiy.

Tom and I were classmates at Fremont High School, 1943-1947, but did not know each well at that time. We made contact on our class' 60th anniversary through Classmates.com. Corresponding with him was rewarding and enlightening for 3 1/2 years. I have saved many of his informative letters. The sense of loss is great. I pray for his family and friends.
