PEORIA - Ivan Eugene Wheeler, 84, father of a Peoria resident, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011, at Mill Creek Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Springfield, Ill.
Born June 19, 1926, to John Frederick and Ibis (Schultz) Wheeler in Concord, Tenn., Ivan married Janice E. Bell on March 17, 1956, in Knoxville, Tenn. She died Feb. 12, 2000, in Brooksville, Fla.
Born to Ivan and Janice, and surviving, are two sons, Roger (Monica Vest) Wheeler of Peoria and Steve (Teri) Wheeler of Miramar, Fla.; three daughters, Sherry Wheeler of Apollo Beach, Fla., Lisa (Tony) Hopkins of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Lora LaNeve of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Gordon Wheeler of Peoria, Tim (Rachel) Wheeler of Jacksonville, Fla., Greg Wheeler of Miramar, Fla., Tony (Cristina) Wheeler of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Micaela and Anthony Hopkins of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Lance LaNeve of Tampa, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Chase, Abigail and Casey; brother, Bill T. (Emma) Wheeler of Abilene, Texas; several stepsisters; and many nieces and nephews.
He managed sporting goods for Montgomery Ward and Kmart and later owned a service station in Anderson, Ind., where he lived from 1973 to 1992, then they retired to Brooksville, Fla.
Ivan was an avid fisherman and bowler.
He served on a U.S. Navy battleship from 1944 to 1946.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011, at Alzheimer's Association, 606 W. Glen Ave., Peoria. Cremation has been accorded; services will be later.
Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home in Springfield is handling arrangements.
