MCNABB - James D. "Buck" Shurts Sr., 70, of 108 Castle Arms Place, Fairfield Bay, Ark., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at his home after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on May 31, 1941, to Kenneth and Lorene (Morris) Shurts in Henry, Ill.
He graduated from Hall High School in Spring Valley, Ill., in 1959.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1959 and served in the 101st Airborne out of Fort Campbell, Ky., until 1962.
He was an iron worker out of Local 393, Aurora, Ill., for 33 years, retiring in 1998.
He married RoseAnn Quartucci Watson on July 1, 1984. They moved to Fairfield Bay, Ark., in 1999 from McNabb, Ill.
He worked part time as a starter on Indian Hills Golf Course in Fairfield Bay for several years. It was a job he truly enjoyed.
He loved his family and was proud of all of them. He also really enjoyed living on the golf course and playing golf with his friends and wife. He belonged to a Friday mixed couples group, the Newcomers, and served on many committees for golf outings. He also belonged to a men's 18-hole league at Indian Hills.
His survivors include his wife, RoseAnn, of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; daughters, Lori (Mark) Mudge of Granville, Ill., Wendy Kramer of Cherry, Ill., and Gaylynn Watson (Kevin) Quinn of Springfield, Mo.; sons, James D. (Sarah) Shurts Jr. of Mark, Ill., and Mike (Dee) Watson of Downers Grove, Ill.; a sister, Sherrie (Rob) McCoy of Peoria, Ill.; and sister-in-law, Ruthie Shurts of Glasford, Ill.; as well as 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, numerous cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard, of Glasford, Ill.
An open house to celebrate Buck's life will be held at the Shurts' home at 108 Castle Arms Place, Fairfield Bay, Ark., on Thursday, Aug. 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. for friends and acquaintances. A formal memorial will be held for family and friends at Barto Funeral Home, 120 W. Cleveland St., Spring Valley, Ill., on Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Donations may be made to the Fairfield Bay Library or the American Cancer Society.
